I vote for strapless.
I wouldn't take a landboard to a skatepark either. _________________ --------------------------------

straps make you think.......that's where your feet are spose' to be
and take up valuable, usable board surface.
feathering your weight, and stance are priceless.
no ego, just a humble path to nirvana. |

PDX monkeyboy I think it rubs people a bit the wrong way when you actually have a site called LOSE THE STRAPS ... others and I interpret that as .. lose the straps you kook..
Like I said I can ride strapless... quite well actually..and it does feel different..probally closer to actually surfing... but when its good size out here on the oregon coast.. 99% percent of strapless guys are just barley surviving...
I dont want to just survive.. I want to smack the holy living shit out of a lip, bust a kick ass air over a three wave 10ft close out.. just in time to grab the fourth wave.. arcing a g force bottom turn and straight up off the lip. and...repeat.
To each his own... just dont tell me yours is the only way.. |
Don't assume people can't surf overhead waves well strapless just because you haven't seen it much.

Yo GeneK: Foghater see lots of riders of all types because when your down there hitting the waves, so is Foghater, as this person lives on the coast and sails the coastal waters 99% more than the rest of us. I think this person knows what they are talking about. . .
Most important point this person makes, is RIDE WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY. Can we stop the bickering now? Please. |

I ride both ways and have fun with and without the straps. With straps I can boost big, throw big ol slow 360's, smack the lip, and basically rip around all over the place. Without straps is much more of a flow and carve session, linking waves together while running 5 mile long downwinders.
Strapped board is 5' 6", strapless is a 6'. Rode both of them today and had an awesome time. No right or wrong, just different.

So yesterday at my local spot, it was blowin' like 20-30mph, waves were about 4-6 feet, looked really fun. I thought to myself, you know, that Holly seems like a really cool chick, and if riding strapless makes HER feel badass, I really want to feel that way too! And I really want to impress this Monkeybutt guy, because he made me feel all butthurt, and if I ride strapless, maybe he'll approve of me. Plus, who doesn't want to feel badass, I mean really, right!?
So, I take my trusty 5'9", and I just rip the straps right off, right there in the parking lot. I think to myself "I wanna be badass tooo! And I'm gonna do it today!" So out I go with my newly strapless board, and whaddaya know, I flew over whitewash with the greatest of ease, smacked the lip with reckless abandon, and floated huge strapless airs like never before! It was TOTALLY frickin' BADASS! I mean BADASS to the umpth degree!!
Wow, I thought, this does make me feel totally badass, and I can really feel my skill improving with every second of strapless ripping! Not only that, I could immediately tell that this strapless thing takes so much more skill, and the skill I have made me realize even more how super badass I really am. It was like badassness was just oozing out of my pores!!!
With my new super badass self, it was like the other riders in the water were like, so inferior. I'm like, dude, you aren't riding strapless, you are a plebian compared to me, out of my way man! All super badass strapless riders get right of way at all times, and don't even question whether I am badass or not, I am riding strapless, of course I am. DUH!
Thank you Folly and Monkeybutt for sharing with me this previously unknown side effect of riding strapless. I feel so badass right now, that I just fricken' floated into work today, I figured, these people driving around me are so NOT badass, that they just don't even matter to a guy as badass as me, and they just need to get the fock out of my way, and guess what, they did! Gawd I am badass! |

Kiting is like religion, as soon as someone tells you that their way is the only cool way and everything else is crap, you know to stop listening to that person.

Sounds like you had a good session; although I suspect that the session ended when your alarm clock went off.
I find that your kiteboarding will be much more rewarding if you don't really pay attention to anybody else on the water unless they are drowning or in your way.
Is that guy better than me? What trick did that guy do? When I first started, a large majority of my time on the water was spent with these thoughts in my head. Probably because I didn't really know what the hell I was doing and I was self conscious.
There is always someone better than you and there are always people worse than you. As gman pointed out, I think the honey badger has it all figured out. You think the honey badger is thinking about how you prefer to ride? No, he just wants to ride, he doesn't care, he doesn't give a shit, he's just a crazzy fuck. _________________ Bury me standing cause I won't lay down!!
