Can anyone recommend cheap accomodations in Mexico at Christmas time? Im thinking Los Barriles because it looks like the least expensive kite spot but I am open to other areas of Mexico: La Ventana, Tulum, Cozemel, ect. It has to be wife and 5yr old friendly. Airfare is ridiculously expensive at that time so it needs to be cheap. (but no tenting). Flying out of Vancouver BC, Bellingham, or Seattle. Any recommendations?

Hi:
I would stay at Palapas Ventana. My Friend Tim Hatler owns the place. He is a super nice guy and loves to play. The accomadations are nice but not frilly. They have restaurant, compressor for diving, panagas and a good launch spot all there. Check em out on line and tell him the Parrot sent you.

If La Ventana either Palapas Ventana, or Casa Verde. Both great on a budget.

If you're truly on a low budget, consider something else....Xmas in Mexico will cost you at least $3,000, probably $4,000 when all is said and done.
LB and LV aqree your best bets. The only activity for families is beach related. There are no amusements for a 5 year old except playing on the beach.
The airfare will be your biggest expense.
If you stay on or near the beach in LB or LV you won't need a car.
Fly into Cabo, not LaPaz.
Airfare for 3 people including baggage fees $1500 - $2000.
RT Shuttle from airport to LB or LV - $200 - $300.
Accomodations: $100 per night * 7 nights = $700. Shop online if that's above your budget.
Most accomodations offer kitchens so you can cook your own meals.

Palapas Ventanna. Tim is a great host. But your 5 year old will be bored to death. There is no pool to hang out. If I were you I would go to Jamaica for the All-inclusive. Same airfare price. Tons of deals all the time. There is a kite beach right next to Starfish Breezes. Great Kiting. Tons of stuff for the wife & kid...

I've recommended this place to many kiters who have wind widows & kids.

This place is so good that I talked a family member into getting married there late Feb 2012. I selfishly want to kite if I'm flying out for a wedding. I'm going to stay an extra week because it is so cheap. My whole family is going because it is so affordable. The food is great. They have all the booze you could want, two great pools, hot tubs, evening entertainment and I think they have activities for the little ones. you can also hire a nanny if you and your wife want to some private time.

The last time I went, I booked it on the internet but for some reason the transaction didn't go through. So I called directly and ended up getting it for an even better deal.

The picture I attached was the last day I was there. It was blowing 15 at 10am.

Hope you have a great trip whatever you decide to do.

so i've gone to cozumel a couple times. stayed at a place called 'hotel costa brava' once, was decent enough and definitely super cheap. Like $35 bux a night. was in a pretty good spot too. That said, there is absolutely nothing to do at that hotel but sleep and shower. Thought i'd throw it out there just in case. Dont have the number, here is the address

hotel costa brava
Av. Rafael E. Melgar Sur #601

I love la Ventana, but wife and 5 yr old friendly it is not. How much do you want to spend? Saipan is great that time of year, choose the hotel with the water park. Wind on the Yucatan seems to be iffy then? Maybe Thailand? Your wife & kid will love the elephant rides. Get a room on the beach in Kailua, Hawaii. Wind may or may not happen though.
