I was thinking the same thing. Launching from the Oregon side by the airport on a South wind doesn't seem like the best idea. Are other people better at going upwind than me (I'm sure they are) or is getting blown across the river just not a concern there for some reason? _________________ Captain kook; always wrong. |

yeah its dead offshore but soooper smooth. Stay right up against the beach. Worst case yep you end up at Wintler walk up to 14 and hitch a ride back round to the airport - or ride with someone and they shoot round and pick you up. Better than riding in offshore at the coast and ending up in Japan eh??? (well maybe not but you'd be dead by the time you got to Japan)
You could go and ride at Wintler but the launch sucks and the flat water on the OR side would be much more fun |

I'm always surprised when there isn't a day of wind out here at the coast. |

I could probably make my way upwind if it was smooth and I had enough power. Last season (my first) at Sauvie did not give me much practice going upwind though because the wind is so damn light; most of my upwind was done on the beach with my board in hand. Maybe I'll wait till I have someone to go with before I try the airport on a southerly wind. Just in case I end up across the river. _________________ Captain kook; always wrong. |

The only place I have gone to the coast so far is "Ponds" (Fort Stevens parkinglot D then take the path south through the bushes there is a little bay thing). I did that on Easties but if I remember right I was told it works okay on Southerlies.
It's real nice because the river water cuts the briny taste of the ocean and not being directly exposed to the ocean you don't have swells/waves to deal with. Also it's pretty shallow. You won't touch at high tide but at low you can wade across. _________________ Captain kook; always wrong. |

The coast it is! |
Careful at the coast, Bro! I hear they are on a Tsunami watch! You just might catch the biggest and last wave of your life!!
P.S.
So sad to hear what happened in Japan. _________________ SAY WHAT YOU MEAN, MEAN WHAT YOU SAY |

somewhat related to current thread... how far up the Columbia does the flood tide change the direction of the current? Sounds like it reverses it at Sauvie... does it affect it all the way up to Troutdale, Rooster? |

I've been told by Flydunes that the tide goes all the way up to the dam. It definitely affects the surface layer of water past Sauvie. If you toss a stick in the water there on an incoming tide the stick will float up river.
I've only been to rooster once but I'm pretty sure I noticed it there as well. _________________ Captain kook; always wrong. |

Besides Lot D at Ft. Stevens in Warrenton, OR, you have 15+ miles of open, driveable beach from Ft. Stevens South to Gearhart. Drive on the beach at Ft. Stevens (follow signs to Shipwreck), or at Sunset Beach, or at Del Rey, or in Gearhart. After that it is wide open!! Good seas today and looks to be solid 10M. |
