Heading to Maui in late May for a couple weeks with a friend who is interested in learning to kite. Is Maui a good spot for a newbie?

It should be okay. It's not the best. You should have plenty of time on the water though.

Maui is not really a good spot for learning but people do it. There are several rock jetties that stick out and are in the way of body dragging if you go downwind and all beginners do. Its deep water quick so you can't stand up. And the wind on the shore gusts around so you don't want to spend too much time with your kite in the air on the beach either.

Much better spots for a newbie are Hatteras or SPI as you have steady winds, shallow flat water, and no obstacles down wind of you so you can go in anywhere and walk back to where you started from.

Thanks for the info. Is SPI decent in March/April? Maybe we can swing a quick trip get him progressing.

Maui is great if you're with nonkiters- lots to do other than chase wind. I went to Maui 2 years ago in May for 2 weeks- not one day of wind. Of course, no place is the sure thing when you are into weather-dependent sports.

SPI is more reliable than Maui and April is probably one of the best months for SPI.

If I'm with the family, Maui-like places are a better fit. But if I'm going to chase wind only, go where it's windiest in the prime season and your more likely golden.

I was in Maui this past July and I would have to say I would never recommend anyone taking a lesson there. Its crowded, rock jetties, kiters that are assholes, kiters that think they are kiters and the list goes on. Its a great place to kite, but not to learn, wasting your money on lessons IMO.
SPI is much better and safer and cheaper. Wind is great in April and May. Aloha

I would do SPI in April instead of Maui instead of May. It's alot cheaper but if you non-kiters with you it can be a bit of a bore.

Tony and Carolb have a couple vacation rentals you might want to take a look at if you head to SPI.
