Wed Feb 16, 11 5:00 pm Any advise on custom gear racks? |

Hey guy's, just bought a small RV and am looking for the best way to haul boards/skis. It came with a luggage tray on the rear and have seen some windsurf rigs that have been outfitted with a custom upright "board locker" that looks pretty sweet. Of course I want it to be lockable and carry boards up to 9'. I'm also trying to figure out a good bike hauling solution.
I've been to the rack stores and done various searches on the web but am surprised of the lack of info. I'm sure there are some ingenious setups out there. any advice, or photo's would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx, Darren

A buddy of mine started with a hitch mounted cargo carrier as a base and then he had Schlosser's in the heights weld up a board rack on top. I don't know about the "locker" idea. You might be able to find something off the shelf that you could mount to the cargo carrier.

Schlosser's could definitely help you out! Might want to explorer aluminum options as the weight savings will pay for itself in fuel.
Sure you don't want to go 9'6 for those nice longboard sessions at Short Sands?

I love the aluminum idea for weight savings! I wonder if there's a nice aluminum mesh material? Does Schlossers do aluminum?
Yeah, as far as height, I'm thinking of an openable cap on the top to accept any length board.

here are a couple that I made out of steel for some folks
the upright one weighed around 200-250 pounds
that big one is like 400 lbs or so but you can fit 4 people in it

Thanks wakeup.
Those are exactly what I'm looking for! I think I'll be going with steel. Aluminum would be outside my budget. They are heavier than I thought. Could you lighten it up by using less mesh? Would you be into making another small one? Price estimate?

Hey , we sell Thule and one way you could go is to get one of their hitch bike racks and then this snowboard carrier adds on to it which you can strap other boards to as well.

I have an used hitch bike rack of my own too and it's cheap if you want it.
Pm me if needed. Hope that helps.
Dave
