Fri Feb 04, 11 1:31 pm 2010 U2 Boots? |
|
|
I am looking for a new pair of boots to put on a Cabrina Custom 130. I've been riding boots for a long time, but they have always been the cheap, low profile type. I like the flexibility. Really all I'm looking for in a boot is a good heal cup and comfort. I don't want it to be too stiff in the ankle.
I've been eying the 2010 U2 (can find some on sale for cheap) mostly because they really match my new board. I know I am totally vain, and I should just find a boot that works, but I have to admit, I really liked the boots I got for my old spleen last year, mostly because they match it so well.
I was wondering is anyone around here has used the newer union and what you thought of the flexibility and ease of use. Those are my two most important criteria.
Thanks for the help (visiting Minnesota Kiter, Wannabe Gorge Kiter) _________________ Eric Paulson |

How do boots work with cold water...like this time of year? I would think if they keep your bare feet warm now, then they would be really hot in the summer. Or can you wear booties inside boots? |

I'm surprised you're rocking boots on a 130. that seems really small for a boots board.
neoprene socks work excellent for keeping your feet warm this time of year. assuming the boot isn't too tight barefoot you can usually fit a sock in. _________________ www.youtube.com/c/christianjohnsons |

Neoprene socks help a bit but they bunch up and cut off circulation if your boots are sized properly for summer kiting. Either way when I've kited this time of year in boots my feet went numb before anything else got cold. Just a choice you have to make.
Regarding the original post, I'm a huge fan of supportive boots. My favorites are the Watsons. They're real comfy and provide lots of support so you can get massive pop and manhandle your board. Wasn't as stoked on last year's Unions but I only tried em once. If you can afford it I'd recommend a higher end closed toe boot. Definite improvement in the edgehold and response, although you may jab your toes into the tip of the boot once in a while on bad landings. I agree that riding a 130cm board with boots ain't right unless you weigh under 120lbs or something. I weigh 165lbs and the 138x42 board is pretty money for me. If your board's too small you'll sink the heelside edge into the water way too easily and kill your speed making it harder to pop. You'll also have to ride a kite size bigger meaning you'd be more at the mercy of the kite whenever you unhook. Something to think about for future board decisions. Good luck. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

Yeah, I'm hoping the board isn't too small. I've been loving my 2006 138 Spleen RIP, for the last four years, but I wanted something with a little more rocker to get more pop when really powered. I was hoping this board would work well as my super lit ride. If it doesn't work for me I'll just sell it and look for something else. I'm about 175 lb.
As for riding cold water in boots, I've found the best is thin wool socks under gore-tex water proof socks. The water still fills the gore-tex socks, but then when you get the boots on the water doesn't circulate, and the thin wool socks work as a bit more insulation. Thin fleece would probably work as well, if you can get them int the boot. This has worked for me on Lake Superior where your lucky if the water is 40 deg, and the air tends to be colder than that.
Hopein for a road trip out your way in August. Don't take all the wind before I get there this summer. _________________ Eric Paulson |

Yeah second Gene on the board size....130 is way to small for you. I'm 175 lbs/6'1" and ride a 142cm WH Joke. Thay small of a board is going to do nothing but hold you back, there are usually a ton of solid wakestyle boards for sale on here come spring time (when everyone is getting their 2011 stuff) Keep an eye out for something in the 138-142 range (SS Darkside, LF DLX, Wainma Hawaii Joke, and Cabrinha Custom are all solid choices) |

check the ronix boots, they are pretty flexy but probably on the pricey side.
several guys up in seattle been riding boots all winter.
most wear some sort of liner or sock.
3mm botties in open toed boots. Crazy!

Unions are a pretty basic boot, super easy to get in and out of though. I like them _________________ BIP- "YOUR GIRLFRIENDS FAVORITE" |
