PostTue Jan 11, 11 10:04 am    Hello, I will be a future kite boarder !!!! Reply with quote

Hello everybody. Finally I was able to get registered on this site.

I am a hard core laser sailor who sails competitively at Willamette Sailing Club, also race on some bigger boats off the coast and up in the sound. Frequent Cascade Locks quite a bit to participate in regattas, and help run races with CGRA.

Have been looking for that next best "sailing" thing to do in my life. Have flown stunt kites for about 10 years down on the coast. Over the last few years I have concentrated on laser racing, and being PRO for sailing events. Also have finally got my sprinter van with a WVO kit running, and so looking forward to some future trip down to the Baja. My 18 foot avon supports regattas on the Columbia, up at cascade locks, and at other events along the west coast.

Kite boarding would be the perfect compliment to my "fun" inventory. I spend 99% of my summer weekends at CGRA, Ft. Stephens on the coast, or up on the east side of Mt. Hood at Sportsmans Park.

So this summer I want to get into kite boarding. Have a shorty wetsuit already, and just looking to get into a basic kite board setup mainly for the coast and cascade locks. Do I really have to take lessons? Is there somebody I can hook up with on this forum to learn the ropes once I get the equipment. I think that you guys will all find that I will be a great contributor to this community. My PRO skills, sailing skills, WVO powered van, and 18 ft avon with 90 HP 4 stroke yamaha will be invaluable to this community.

Look forward to meeting some of you, and becoming friends/acquaintances of forum members/kite boarders.

the key to learning to kiteboard is meeting kiteboarders and taking taking them to empty beaches and sand bars with your power boat.

Hey mackconsult. Welcome to the end of your free time and to the forum. Smile Glad you decided to take it up.

Take a lesson, learn how to sheet the bar. That will be your problem

You'll progress fast, but take a lesson

Hey Ray, Elliot here. Great move to finally pick up kiting. I'm sure I could help you out, but everyone recommends to take at least 3 lessons. If you tell the instructor about your experience you might be able to get it down to one.
But again that's the normal recommendation...

Yes, you really do need to take at least ONE lesson. You will probably pick it up really fast, but there is more to kiteboarding than just the act of kiteboarding. You need to know self rescue, first and foremost.

Elliot,

Thanks for the heads up. I will follow up on your recommendation seeing as you know me .... and my current "marine" capabilities.

I have been thinking about a moth ....... then I decided a kite and board would be much easier to take with me to the coast and down in the gorge. I get my fill of racing in the laser, and on other larger boats .....

Looking forward to kiting with yah Very Happy

Great sport to get into. Yeah, lessons are really a good way to go. Sure they are really expensive but so is totally trashing your gear the first time that you go out.

I'd find a buddy who kites (sounds like you have one already) and have him help you keep an eye out for gear so you can sorta start picking up a few things, then when it warms up find someone to get a lesson from where you can go 1:1.

I think Tanya w/ cascade is pretty well recommended on the forum. Anyway. Go buy a small trainer kite 1-3 meters screw around with that till you can fly it pretty much blind and then go get a lesson.

If you go 1:1 for your lessons you won't waste so much time and with your other exp should progress rapidly. Welcome.

What you really need to ask yourself is what is your risk acceptance level?

If you do not take lessions you will probably kill yourself or someone around you and then drop the sport. Always wondering why? how did that happen? Im such a good sailor I just dont get it?

If you take lessions you will be killing it within one season. Hitting rights with your coasty homies and doing sweet down winders. Cracken some hits at "The Secrect Spot" and smileing untill your face hurts. Making up excusese to your wife as to why you were'nt at work today and trying to justify that trip to Bali.

So really you got to ask yourself what is your risk acceptance level?

A very wise man keeps telling me, he cant chose to have fun and be safe at the same time. He has to pick one based on how much risk he is willing to acceptance. You will die if you fuck up, but if you dont fuck up you will have the time of your life.....Do yourself and the kiteboarding community a favor and take the lessons. I dont really want to read another fatility report on kiteforum.
