Yes, you really do need to take at least ONE lesson. You will probably pick it up really fast, but there is more to kiteboarding than just the act of kiteboarding. You need to know self rescue, first and foremost.

I hear you brave young Mackconsult, you are hungry but with no lessons you will get rocked.
To learn the ancient methods, sacred doors you must unlock.
Escape your self-reliance and the clutches of your windless neighborhood.
On a journey you must go to find the land they call "THE HOOD".
In the town of HR, where the river meets the sand.
You can form a strong alliance, Cascade Kiteboarding quite a knowledgeable band.
To find your glory sessions, through the lessons you must walk.
You will learn invaluable skill sets, now go my son and ROCK!

Is it wise to invest in one of these 3 meter training kites?

I am still planning on taking lessons.

regarding having a trainer kite, yeah I have been kiting solid for 3 years now and still enjoy rippin the trainer for fun. It is nice to have so you can get friends flying it, or just fly it with one hand and drink a beer with the other on the beach after your session! I would suggest a 3m or 4m so you can rip on a longboard as well.

trainer--->lessons----->gear up---->kite a lot---->rock it

no time to waste brother......wind and waves happening right now......start the progression today...never an off season in the Pac NW....commit and charge it......

The PNW coast kiter's cult classic.............. http://vimeo.com/2653992

(I used a 2m trainer...low cost...gets the job done... you can safely teach friends/family with it once you're done....my $.02 anyway...there are good cases for a 3m though....don't delay...choose and move forward....)
good luck.... Cool
