Thu Dec 30, 10 8:29 am No wind in Barilles/ Ventana? What's going on? |
|
|
Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me what's up with the wind down south this winter. I've been in Los Barilles since Dec 8th and we've had maybe 4-6 decent days of wind, nothing of memory really. Normally its windy at least 70-90% of days, really good wind, up to 25-30 kts. I don't think its been more than 20 since I've been here.
Can anyone explain what's going on? I thought lots of snow in Cali (like Mammoth) was good for the Norte?... Is this a climate change issue? Its sure been a downer... at least its warm here.
Happy New Years! _________________ JHB |

Its not been the best in La Ventana (since 12/16) although have gotten out pretty much every day except for 3 on bigger kites.
I am no expert but from what I read the high pressure which normally resides over the SW US in winter (four corners) has been absent because of a steady stream of low pressure systems hitting the west coast. Without this high there has not been much in the way of isobars to drive the north wind down the sea of cortez. Unforturnately does not look like the situation is going to change any time soon... |

my experience has put la nina years as lousy baja years. Best to stay home and hit the slopes. Not to say it doesn't happen, just doesn't seem to be as solid |

South Padre has been going off, check december wind archive on i kitesurf.
or http://www.seagypsysphotographs.com/ for wave shots (keep in mind the outside break is a lot bigger than the inside sandbar the surfers shred) |

My wife and I just booked a flight for a two week trip to Baja Sur and are looking for a nice and affordable rental house in Los Barriles and/or Ventana. If anyone has any leads or knows of someone with such a rental, please hit me up. We'll be there between 2/26 and 3/11.
Hopefully the wind will be there too!
Thanks! |

We're going to split our trip into a week in Lost Barriles and a week in La Ventana. Thanks to tips received here we've found a great rental house at a reasonable price for our week in La Ventana.
We're still trying to find a place close to North Beach in Los Barriles in the $400-$500/week vicinity. We'll need it from 2/26-3/5. If you have any leads, please share them!
Thanks. |

Weather is weather... This year we had by far our worst wind stretch in La Ventana in 15 years--8/21. Prior to that it was 14/21 as a low with several 100% trips. Since leaving jan 1 wind started to kick back to normal and the snow in oregon has gone to hell.

Thank goodness for full sail and some interesting nfl playoff games. Looking at the baja joes cam is torture nonetheless

Unfortunately, I left LV Jan 1, and am now back here in the Tropics of
Hood River. NE vs NY in 40 minutes. If I can ride the stationary bike for the first half I will feel that I have earned my second half pints...
A buddy of mine got down there Jan 6 and the wind has been the usual LV excellent. Going back third week of March, which last year was spectacular. We shall see...

Just got back last night...didn't want to do this because I really don't like reading about everybody else having fun while I am rotting away in a Portland rain, but...
5 solid days of wind and a couple days of pretty big swells as well. I am sick of kiteboarding! I don't want to see another kite for at least a couple days.
Montana,
Captain Kirk's in La Ventana is awesome, but it sounds like you have housing arrangements now. If you don't, I would take a look there. They have actual Casas and a little Airstream trailer for $60/night: upwind from the fray with a nice reef that breaks with a good swell. Our third time there and we will be going back.
Good cinnamon rolls at Playa Central by the campground. Chille Rellenos at El Rincon (old restaurant in La Ventana), Fish Tacos and Ceviche at Las Palmas in El Sargento: big yellow place right on the beach. |
