Last year was my first experience with running downwinders on a directional in the gorge!!!

WOw...that was fun! Very Happy

What charactoristics should I be looking for in a kite so as to be able to park the kite and focus on waveriding?

My take: lower aspect kite seems to be better than high aspect kite for downwind drift. Kites without a center strut seem to have more of a "pocket" in the canopy and drift very well. If you go in the surf a kite that has more swept wing tips is easier to relaunch quickly. I think medium bar pressure is easier to work with than very light or heavy bar pressure. (light = no feel, heavy = slower input vs reaction time). Smooth power delivery through a downloop is also nice.

Quite a few good options out there that will work. I'll throw out the Best Kahoona as a good choice and let the people who know about the other brands list those options.

For what your talking about i would defiantly agree that you want a low aspect kite. having lots of grunt on a stable kite that sits back in the wind window is ideal. RPM is the first thing that comes to mind, something thats design to park

BUT if you really want to RIDE a wave rather than park and mess around you want to learn to turn with your kite. its all about S-turns and for that you need a completely different kind of kite than a parker!

Please dont post Kite vs Kite posts.

Everyones going to tell you to get the kite they fly. If you have certain kites you are interested in start a post regarding just that kite or better yet set up a demo with one of the local reps of the kites your interested in. No better knowledge flying it for yourself
