As a kiter and past windsurfer it is my opinion that when a kiter and windsurfer are on a possible collision course it seems to me to be common sense that a kiter goes below the windsurfer regardless of right of way rules.
However if each are hundreds of yards apart then right of way rules apply.
Due to the length of kite lines it is just more sensible.
Is there an etiquette or an unwritten rule that is taught at kite schools?
Is there an awareness?

This action could prevent an accident.

Shark food for thought.

Why are asking this when theysnow os flying? Did something happen that prompted your question? I would think rights of water navigation apply AND common sense (something they don't teach in school). Playing chicken can be hazardous for everyone involved

Come-on. Lack of delivery. Got my hopes-up for a new youtube video of a Spanky Spangler style staged head-on kiter-windsurfer collision.

You know Spanky killed Randy doing that stunt, he went a little to fast and decapitated Randy.

There is no right or wrong answer here, each collision course is a unique situation. I tend to yield right of way because I know the windsurfers will bitch about it, even if I can make it upwind easily.

...

No shit? Had to Google it. It seems like a pretty stupid stunt...

Quote:
PHOENIX STUNT DRIVER KILLED WHEN CARS COLLIDE IN MID-AIR

SAN ANTONIO - A stunt driver was killed last night when the top of his car was sheared off during a midair collision. His wife and 3-year-old son watched from the audience.

Randy Hill, 49, of Phoenix died instantly when his car was struck by another car driven by daredevil Spanky Spangler, who was not injured, organizers said.

Hill retired from stunt driving eight years ago and only recently decided to do the stunt at the the Alamodome.

The two cars were supposed to meet head-on at 50 mph. Organizers did not immediately know what went wrong.

A hush fell over the crowd immediately after the accident, spectator Elsa Quevas said.

"The car's cage was cut in half. We were all hoping that the guy was going to pop out of the car," Quevas said.

Hill and Spangler had twice performed the stunt in the 1980s.

Quote:
In front of 55,000 people at the Houston Astrodome, daredevils Spanky Spangler and Randy Hill crashed in midair above a row of junk cars for cushioning. Their 1981 head-on crash was the equivalent of hitting a brick wall at 120 mph!

Spangler and Hill tried to duplicate their midair spectacle in San Antonio in 1993, but things went horribly wrong. Instead of colliding at their front bumpers, Spangler’s car crashed down on Hill’s roof and crushed him.

A remorseful Spangler is interviewed in the book, calling his friend Hill’s death the equivalent of “losing his right arm.”

and COMPLETELY unrelated, but on one of the pages where I found the above quote was this picture...

We've all felt this way after taking a wave! Very Happy

Another popular, but untrue, myth. A head on of two cars each doing 60 mph is the equivalent of hitting an immovable object at 60 mph. In each case, the occupant's body and the car experience a sudden deceleration from 60 mph to 0.

There was a great Mythbusters episode that features this. Kind of mind boggling as it seems logical, but it was "busted" all the way.

Was referring to the Astrodome Spangler/Hill mid air crash where no one was injured;

Whoever realizes first that they're on a collision course should get the hell out of the way! Just a basic indication of a higher kiter/windsurfer maturity!!

That's it in a nutshell. Thing is, there are so many egos in both sports just looking for the next jousting opportunity. You can't rely on common sense, right of way rules, or courtesy out there... but its nice when it happens.

On a "collision" course? Here's what to do: first, remember, its about not running into the other guy, its not about "proving" you have right of way.

Make eye contact, even at a distance: "hey bud, I see you, do you see me?".

Once you've made eye contact, if you are kiting with your LEFT HAND forward, change course to go around them.

If you are kiting/sailing with your RIGHT HAND forward, hold your line for a few seconds and see if they make an obvious move one way or another.
-) they change their course. Either hold yours, of if you like, change yours a bit to widen the gap you'll pass each other even further apart. Widening the gap is a way of sort of saying "thanks dude, here's a little more room for ya too..."

-)they don't change their course. MOTHER FUCKER!!! Twisted Evil RAMMING SPEED, BRACE FOR COLLISION!!! SHIELDS UP! SCOTTY, GIVE ME ALL SHE's GOT!!!. Ok, calm down. There are a myriad of reasons as to why they won't change course. Sure, its most likely they're a dick, but you're kinda screwed anyways (see Sub Section "C", Paragraph 18...) Maybe they don't the rules, maybe there is an obstacle behind you that you can't see... whatever. Lets get this over with and get back to having fun on the water. So, make a clear, definitive evasive maneuver... change your course and make it obvious that you are going to head in this new direction... even better you do it while the approaching sailor/kiter is watching you. If you think you think your lines may collide, get the kite up high to avoid this.

-)they hold their course, you pass without incident.

-)they just changed their course, you're back to a collision course again. Ah shit, really? I mean, come on man, its sunny, its windy... do we really have to do this?? Ok, repeat the last step, make an obvious course change. If you can/want, turn and go the opposite direction. If they really want to play games, make as if you are going to try to go upwind pretty hard, then suddenly bear off and go waaay downwind. Will work every time.

Sub Section C, Paragraph 18: Why you are screwed.

Because you noticed you were on a collision course. At that point the final letter of the law that will be read to you as stand in front of judge in your dripping wetsuit and boardshorts feeling like you're in one of those "oh no, I'm in my pajamas" dreams is that you are obligated to avoid a collision regardless of whether or not you have right of way. Right of way does not mean you have the right to insist upon a collision.

Hey, there's always wankers in both sports looking to "play"... best bet is to steer clear really early, make it a non-issue before the other guy even realizes it.

Suppose the windsurfer was Mr. Burns and I'm the kiter. Doesn't the rules of gross tonage apply? lol

All I am trying to do is simply make aware that if a kiter moves 15 feet below the windusrfer no harm can happen. But a windsurfer would have to move at least 60 ft below the kiter if lines come crashing down.
As a kiter it just makes sense to go below a windsurfer, easy to do and no harm done.

LOL, Seriously? Scared of the lines? It's like being scared of sharks... You know we can raise our kites right? Kiters do it all day, everyday, passing each other without incident. Kite lines are a lot longer than 60 feet, why are you even on this forum if you're not a kiter? You don't even know what you're talking about.

Kiters don't owe windsurfers anything and windsurfers don't own the water, get real.

I don't want to go downwind of a windsurfer unless I have too. Windsurfer setups are heavy and become missiles when the rider falls, unintentionally or maybe intentionally... Hard to tell sometimes.
