Im getting dragged to Palm Springs by the wife and outlaws around spring break. (yes kicking and screaming) Just wondering if anyone knows interesting things to do other than sit around a pool sulking and wishing I was near a clean body of water for 10 days with my kite gear.
Help!

This is the closest body of water that I could find. Looks nice!

What to do? Are you kidding? Answer this question; Get in your car and go for a short drive and tell us: "How windy does it get at the Ponds?"

Here are some posts taken from another forum discussion about this place, not far from Palm Springs:

quote:

"The Ponds was classic. It was such a cool place. It was where I first
sailed a short(ish)board - a Mistral Taloa!! Many fond memories...

It used to get so windy, that when a BIG blast came through, stones
were flying at you. We'd dive under the water rather than stand on
the shore and get pelted.

It used to get so windy that one day, when sailing with Jeff Magnan,
it took two of us to carry a 2.7m sail to the water. We'd sink the
sail, hold it down with rocks - and attach the board under water. The
board was carried by holding the back footstrap. I'd then waterstart
my 16" speedboard with both feet already in the straps! I weigh
220lbs.

It used to get so windy that even though the water was dead flat, when
people crashed, their gear would sometimes fly twenty feet + in the
air (over the heads of people downwind!!!). Bloody noses and broken
booms were the order of the day.

It used to get so windy that you could always tell the newbies. They
often parked facing downwind and immediately had their doors
"modified" when, upon opening said door, it would fly open, the door
handle ending up next to the headlight!

It used to get so windy that when they held a speed contest there,
they brought out 40' shipping containers to allow people to rig in
(away from the wind). They placed the containers facing into the wind
(the correct way). Even so, from what I hear, several containers got
flipped in the high winds!

And it used to get so dark, that when we sailed there at night, it was
really hard to see when you were about to run out of pond!

And then a jet skier died there (ran out of pond) - and it was game
over. The people at the local water company could no longer turn a
blind eye to what was going on - and we all got kicked out.

What a sad day that was Sad

As Alan suggested in his post, it is unlikely that it will ever be the
same...
…………..

What's the deal with the Ponds? Are they open to sailors or is access
>>still restricted?

They probably are where you think they are. East of Banning before you
reach Palm Springs. They're under the wind generator field. The Ponds
rarely have much water. They depend on runoff from the local mountains and
the past two years have been very low as far as rain/snow goes. In the LA
basin this season (starting in June 2006) we have had a grand total of 1 1/2
inches of rain.

I feel for you bro. Yeah, I go stir crazy there too with the 1 mile by 1 mile blocks and driving with all the f#cking gray hairs (coming from P-town, with the smallest inter city blocks in the nation). But sometimes you have to pay your dues with the "outlaws." Think of it this way, your wife now owes you a kiting vacation and or perhaps your paying back your debits for your "wind widow" kite addiction.

Here are a few suggestions.

Indians Wells Pro Tennis tourney

http://www.bnpparibasopen.com/

Pro Tennis. This is the biggest tourney outside of the 4 majors. Occurs in early March for a couple of weeks. I've gone about 6 times in the last 15 years. Last year was really good. I prefer the earlier rounds; get to see more players and matches up close on side courts.

Joshua Tree National Park:

Just over an hour travel time from the 30 mile long valley. It goes Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio.
March probably is too early to see the spring desert flowers, but there is tons of other stuff. The bolders/rocks are like a set from the original Star Trek-world class climbing for sure. Bring a couple a frisbees and someone else, make up a frisbee golf course as you walk thru the park.

Tennis

Hiking:

I can't get the link to post, but I have flown over Diamond Valley Reserve several times and there is a marina at the northeast end. It's only about an hour west of Palm Springs. May be worth checking out.

Thanks for the suggestions. Has anyone rented Mt bikes there? Ive come across some youtube bike clips up in the hills that look pretty good. It looks like there are a few outfits doing rentals.

Windsufed there a bunch back in the day and got the 40 grit sandblasting on the front of the old 65 van. Alpha speed week they brought a bunch of containers in to store gear etc. Winds tossed them like toys and one landed in the water with locked doors. A few people had wipe outs where their gear would catapult across the surface getting blown into the leeward bank and tossed up and over into the next pond.

Many good times were had here ripping it up in Palm Spring's drinking water!
