So, it seems like the wind at Rooster has been super strong lately (gusts at 50 today).

Is this typical for the months to come? I ask because I would need to buy a smaller kite.

Also, what kind of gear do people use in the winter months -- is a dry-suit necessary? 5/4? hood? gloves? etc?

Hey Wise Guy - every year is different fer ser. Rooster Rock likes to blow its balls off when its relatively cold and sunny out. It looks like the clouds are starting to roll in. When the clouds roll in - the wind rolls away Confused

So the question is - how good are you at forecasting? Grab an eight ball Laughing

If the next few months bring lots of clouds - then rooster rock will likely result in flat water. If the next few months bring sunny skies and cool (not cold) temps then you can expect more of the same.

In my experience - the next few months aren't going to bring a whole lot of wind at rooster rock. I'm guessing the clouds are going to start hovering around and staying.

As for kiting in the winter. You can kite the coast year round in a 5/4. No dry suit needed. But if you plan on kiting the gorge in the winter - then you will likely need a dry suit. Gorge waters are colder than the coast.

its good to have a small kite as it blows balls out east in the spring, at the coast in the summer and winter and rooster in the fall.

Winter kiting though...uggh. Its all fun and games right now but your first rooster session when the water is cold as fuck, your hands are freezing when your rigging and you are wearing a hood, booties, and gloves in the howling wind may make you realize that there is indeed an "off season" to gorge kiting.

Rest, pay attention to your girlfriend and go somewhere warm to kite for a week.

Winter Rooster = 50 gusting to 70 in 36-38 degree water... Most people that are still riding the Gorge head east (Stevenson or Viento) or west (Washougal, Camas, PDX, or Ponds). Obviously there are lighter days, but it will crazy enough that you can't ride.

Ken had the 4.5 out the other day when it was gusting 50-55 and said it was totally fine. Didn't have to work it either, but it's still going to take 60+ to boost that kite! Wink
