| Yea, you'll find that in the middle of the summer on 26, on the way to coast. One thing you'll notice if you think about it is the worst offenders are often in blue minivans. |

So you probably already know this but it's illegal to drive in the passing lane when not passing - in Oregon, Washington, California, and many other states. (Here in California people mistakenly call it "the fast lane" but I blame Don Henley for that). The reason it's illegal is because of federal studies years ago showing that improper passing-lane usage can impede emergency response vehicles over 2 miles behind the impedance. People who stay in the left lane clearly don't think it's a problem (rationalization being one of the highest powers of the human mind), but that guy who thinks he's saving your life by forcing you to drive the speed limit may have just killed the guy having a heart attack four miles up the road.
Funny how different regions seem to have their own driving characteristics. Here in California people will stack up in the left lane of an 8-lane highway and tailgate at 85+ MPH, but nobody is willing to pass on the right because that would be too dangerous! Oregon drivers seem the most polite (and slowest) out of the many states I've lived in, and Seattle is the city I hate driving in the worst (and I grew up in Boston!).
I agree - American drivers should be forced to drive in Europe before getting a license here (and we should replace most of this country's stop signs with roundabouts but that's a different topic!). |

So, You must have flown into Seattle or you would've driven I-5 through my home town of Tacoma THE WORST. Polite (like Seattle) and Stupid (think trailer trash)

I hate the leap frogging that people do. I pass, return to the right set and the cruise at a faster pace. Than they realize how slow they were going, speed up, pass me then slow down again   |

I grew up driving in CA. The one thing I love about CA drivers is their ability to drive 85MPH bumper to bumper. It is amazing and a testament to their skill that there not more accidents. If we had CA driving skills in Seattle, I firmly believe that half of our traffic problems would disappear overnight.
In Seattle, If you merge at the point where two lanes merge into one, it is considered impolite. You must merge at least 1/4 mile before the lane ends or you are "cutting in line". Seattle drivers take politeness to a level that causes more problems than it solves too. Just make a freaking decision and go people.
The one thing that astounds me the most about Seattle drivers is their ability to panic when it is raining. 
I dream of using some Ben-Hur hubcaps everyday on my drive to work. I could teach so many lessons that need to be taught. |

Agree that this is a bit frustrating, nonetheless I think it is the responsibility of the person merging to adjust their speed to enter the freeway. Not the responsibility of the person already on the highway to let people in. |

Actually I find driving in CA easy, in the bay area and San Diego at least (not a fan of L.A. traffic). The picture I had in mind when I wrote that relates more to people sitting in the passing lane even when traffic is light and there are one or two lanes empty to the right of them. The driver in front is too clueless to pull to the right to be overtaken, and the people behind them are impatiently trying to 'push' them along, whereas on the east coast anyone sitting in the left lane would just be blitzed by people passing them on the right.
I'm spoiled because my piddly 6-mile work commute is by bike (it's slower to drive it). What sucks though is being stuck on 101 without my carpool buddy when the wind is cranking at Third! (And yeah, CHP is on to the inflatable passenger gig).
Regardless, Forrest has the best commute hands down! Not going to picture his work attire tho... |

I'm writing this from behind some douche in tesla doing 65 next to another car...and the posted limit is 70. I love people that own fast cars and drive them like old ladies.
Salmon, I pulled the "unstoppable merge" on this teenager yesterday. I was passing him (on the right of coarse) and he guns it. I was like "dude I had a long day and I have been thinking about a new car for awhile). He wasn't budging so I just stopped looking back.
On another friendly driver note, I discovered that flashing the "king pin" (tongue through two fingers) works much better than the finger when dealing with aggresive female drivers.

I'm in the minority here, but if the driver in either lane is doing the speed LIMIT there is nothing you can legally do to pass them. . .
Now with that said, when I had my sportbike, if you doing less than 20 over get the hell out the way! Those bikes aren't made to do the speed limit, theres a reason it use to go 183!
What is it with the OR speed limits anyway? I would never live there just because of the slow pace! Never had a problem with NV and hwy speeds of 70 on single lane hwy's! WTH OR? 55? Seriously?

| It's against the law for you to limit the speed of anyone. This is because you don't know if the person behind you is fleeing danger, or in an emergency situation. If you read the signs in Oregon they say "Slower Traffic Keep Right" not "Traffic going slower than the speed limit keep right". Anyway, I don't care, I drive about 1000 miles a year. |

This has to be a social initiative as the government, though in need of the revenue, obviously won't enforce it.
