Has anybody ever been charged an oversize baggage fee for their kiteboard bag (DaKine 5 foot with wheels) when flying in the US? We are flying Continental to South Padre, do I need to budget the extra $100 each way?

Continental is one of the worst airlines out there as far as bags go, and at PDX they are wise to the deceivers. I suggest shipping your gear, or expect to pay the extra $$$.

last year I just rented boards while there. $100 for the week and I could change boards everyday. I believe most of the shops now do this. I called ahead and arranged it. Wish I could do this on all my Kite vacations!

Couple of my buddies were just returned from a visit in the Gorge. The guy on Continental got dinged for his NSI bag. Other buddy on Southwest with same bag got it on for free.

This spring I checked a Dakine Outlaw (~ 5 feet long) with Continental at Brownsville full of kite gear (but no boards) at 50.5 pounds for $25.
I sent all the boards by UPS because I wanted to take my surfboard. The swell was poor so I ended up not needing the surfboard anyway. ~$160 round trip and a nasty ding on the board. For surfboard, I'll definitely rent from now on. I'll hedge my bets and pack the board in the Outlaw. Figure it's unlikely to get hit on both ends and even if I do, $200 is worth the convenience.

Definitely recommend renting a board. Air Padre has a killer selection and I heard they just got in the new Wainman surfboards. The best thing about demoing a board is you can take out what is going to be good for the conditions that day. I've had good luck carrying on my kites. You can do without clothes, but your kite...

Hi All
Many posts about this .
Where is Jeff Dunhams , Achmed , maybe he can help ?
Oh , well maybe later .
I have flown with all of those . Continental , US , Delta and never had a problem .
I had a bag made that fits all my gear , it just goes through oversize luggage but no extra fees .
I believe it's because I'm flying from canada because when asked I tell them whats in the bag .... ?
