Headed to Hood River Sept 9 - 13 (pray to the wind Gods) air temp look to be in the 60's (BOO!) anyway i have not spent much time there except for 4 epic days in July! What would one recommend for suit? Wet suit? Also considering purchasing a NPX Lucifer dry suit. Thoughts?

you don't need a dry suit, that's for sure. Long leg short arm 3/4 mil more than enough

I'm kind of a panzy in the water, I get cold easily, so I wear a 5/4/3 wetsuit along with insulated gloves and boots when it gets really cold. I took my lessons this season in hood river in April I think. Basically as soon as the water was warm enough that Justin at Gorge Performance would teach me and I wasn't cold at all in my wetsuit even after spending a couple hours in the water.

I would say just get a good wetsuit and then you can go all winter. A good wetsuit will keep you warm in the ocean so once the river gets colder than 55 (I think that's the temperature of the ocean around here) if it's too cold for you just go to the coast instead of the river.

For 65-70 F water temp I usually just wear a rash guard and an RFS hydroskin bathing suit under board shorts if its sunny out. Otherwise a 3/2 should be plenty.

this has been cold summer fer ser. I think i used my 3\2 for the last time this season. I am going to have to use my 4\3 for whatever part of the season we have left.

3/2 shorty if the sun is out. An additional wind skin 2mm top. East winds in september ...probably my 3/2 full suit. I can kite in my 5/4/3 all winter and at the coast. No real need for a dry suit

I'd say something in between what Macaframa and Holly are recommending.

If I'm going to be out a long time, I wear a 5/4. Keeps you toasty even when it's nuking wind. Screw getting cold.

I used to wear a 3/2 short-leg long-arm all the time even when it was too cold for a 3/2. I was willing to freeze because I hated getting in and out of my zipless full suit. Getting in and out of those f'd up zipless entry suits is like giving birth to yourself. Then I found an old school 5/4 will a full zip down the back. I'm warm and happy now.

If I could find a suit with partial zips up the calves too, I'd be even happier.

O, and I never wear board shorts over my wetsuit. I'm not into fashion and I'd feel like a muslim if I was so messed up about my body that I thought I had to double bag my junk.

I was wearing a 2m shorty Sat and I was just fine (it was sunny). I finally broke down and put my full 4/3 in the car prob wear that from now on if it's chilly

Thought I would chime in again about avoiding freezing your ass off. One thing you can do to avoid cold hands is to keep your head warm. I found this out the hard way by forgetting my hoodie when it's cold and windy. My hands froze twice as fast when my head was cold. If you don't like wearing a hooded wetsuit you can use a neoprene skull cap like triatheletes wear. I used to have a nice one that I found on the beach but I think it's in kraemer's trunk or something Smile

Fly Dunes, I know its a biatch to get in and out of zipless full suits, but they do keep you warmer. If you have some one give you a quick hand it makes the process two or three times easier. To get out - I ask a friend to pull my shoulder down over my elbow - easy to get out now. I can show you the next time we are getting skunked together.

And LMFAO regarding double bagging yer junk. I guess not all of us have sufficient confidence in our junk to be showing it off all the time.

OK Holly... Thats great and all for a woman, but do you know what cold water does to a mans self esteem? Not to mention the physical effects.
