I'm thinking of going to Rooster today for the first time. Any tips I should consider? How much of an issue is the fact that the wind and current have the same direction?

The wind should be plenty strong enough to stay upwind. Bring little kites. The further East you launch, the more room you have downwind to get out in case of a problem. After you drift West of RR, the next safe getout is way west near Corbet. Rooster may nuke out today. Bring LITTLE kites! Bring medium and maybe even big kites too, you never know when it's going to drop off. Late afternoon it'll drop off, probably. There's lots of mud at the west end of Rooster. This can be very dangerous while launching and landing due to no traction. If you go down the stairs at the east end of the parking lot, bear left diagonally towards the river, there'll be a trail. Look for the sign for the Volleyball courts. Beware the VS. Very Happy

Not a whole lot of dangers out there. Here is a thread that discusses rooster:
http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-18855-0.html

If you walk straight down the steps to the muddy area - know that the muddy area is a wind shadow. The wind is much cleaner near the water. Water levels change a bunch. Sometimes there is mud at the end of the steps - sometimes the steps are under water. Either way, you can drive to the far east end of the parking lot. And hike through the bushes (there are trails) Beware of the Viet Schlong though - they will be in full force. That trail will take you to a launching point.
