For those out there that wear contacts - how do you deal with the water blasts to your face? Have they ever come out? Paintball mask? Goggles? _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights! |

kite and/or windsurf since 1984. I have lost 3 contacts in all of those years--2 at the coast. No glasses/goggles etc.
Not a problem

dude no problem with contacts, riding with them for years
try with them at first and if you feel you need some protection you can always wear some sweet stylin' eyewear
I want to get lasik, how much does that cost these days, sorry for the hijack..... _________________ i like to kite the board |

In my extensive experience with crashing, if the crash is bad enough to mess up your contacts, it's also bad enough to rip swim goggles off your head. Works for me to bob in the water for a few seconds after getting water in my eyes and just let the contacts settle (assuming you have soft ones - I'm guessing hard ones would be a different story). _________________ - Laura |

Been kiting with mine for three years. I've lost a contact two or three times. Just need to be sure to shut your eyes before you go under. If not, they will wash out. Sometimes though, they've gotten caught on my eyelashes, and I've been able to grab them with my hand, put the contact in my mouth, come into shore, and pop them back in. |

Kited a couple years with contacts, sucked balls, if it wasn't the continual spray of dirty water it was the face plants messing with them.
Got Lasik in Dec09, like someone else said--best money spent ever, almost. Vision is now 20/16 with slight halo'ing at night, which isn't a big deal since I can see underwater, wake up ready to go and no bullshit monthly expense of solution, glasses, etc.
Cost-wise I spent $2K and woke up the next morning to perfect eyesight-worth it! |

I got Lasik March 2010 at OHSU. My quality of life is so much better, totaly worth the money. I can ski, kite, drive and go out without having to deal with glasses (I had Myopia). I tried contacts once but hated having to touch my eyes, also they always were bloodshot. |

Hey Martin,
I've always ridden with my soft contacts - no problem - blasted in the face w/ water / sand etc. They never move or have issues on the water. If your contacts are prone to popping out or your eyes are really sensitive it could be more of an issue. Mine are Air Optix night & days and I generally have to pry them off my eyes at the end of the day anyway.
Actually had some sand in one today at the coast, and it kind of bugged me for the first time. I figured a the water would wash it out, so I rode out and got blasted by the waves & it fixed itself! |

I just started kiting last summer (with soft lenses). I never had a problem with them while kiting, but I always worried about them washing out and all that river water made them terribly hazy afterward until I could soak them in cleaning solution. I always had to make sure to be the one to drive out to Hood River so my husband (who has naturally good vision) could drive home.
In January I got Lasik. I was much happier the next time I went out on the water! |

Just went to eye MD (Cascade eye center) for problems with my contacts moving in my eyes when I was in the water. He gave me some new contacts to trial that were tighter in my eyes. After trying two different kinds I got a pair that fit well and don't move in my eyes when they get wet. Well worth the visit and less money then lasix : )

I wear cheap sun glasses with croaky, lost at least 4 pair in 4 years, but no contacts, they keep spray out and provide uv protection. Works fine for wakeboarding too. |

not a contact wearer but do wear seaspecs every session
- once a year i face plant (in the surf) and blow the lens out - it smarts...
(think shades do really help over time) _________________ Go Deep!

I wear standard old Accuvue contacts and SeaSpecs shades. I lost a contact a couple of times on hard wipe-outs with the full face flush (but never lost the shades!) but I always have a spare set of contacts in my kite bag. No real issues in general. |
