College for Kiteboarding

If your a kitboarder , primarily strapless surfboard style, and you want to go to school on the WC what schools do you pick? Kiteboarding since 8th Grade- Hawaii not an option unfortanately

CGCC has some prerequisite classes that are guaranteed to transfer to a 4 year school by law. Also, if you wanna get a really terrific job in the wind turbine industry they have a program.

UC Santa Barbara. You'll love Jalama for kiting in waves and you'll love Isla Vista for eyeing babes. If you want to kite once a month and surf every day, check out San Diego.

University of Washington is good if you don't mind a 3 hour drive to the coast. But we get wind all year round up here locally (light in the summer, but that's what the gorge is for)

you don't need to go to college to kiteboard...

I second UCSB (pretty insane spot - I know I never would have graduated - I would recommend Philly or some Rust Belt City - ugly chicks and minimal distractions)

If I could go back to picking schools I would have for sure gone to a community college first to get prerequisite classes out of the way for way less $$, so go to CGCC and live the gorge life while schooling! Then transfer to a 4 year and do it up!

I went to a 4 year right away and wish I didn't, CGCC would have been the right choice!

CGCC is a great place to get a solid foundation for a career. The cost of living in The Dalles is low compared to Cali. I went to school for my undergrad in So Cal, but it wasn't cheap.
The guys who are completing the turbine program are getting offers before they graduate!

Living in Oregon is 4 to 5 months of kiting and maybe more if you are not bothered by cold weather.

Dude, if I was a kid again and considering a career I'd be looking really hard at this job/career area.

The guys that know this stuff are going anywhere they want and pulling major over time and making big bucks as soon as they graduate.

These jobs are all over the globe.

PEPPERDINE, Malibu CA.

Great school, great location. Very close to good kiting & surfing year around.

UCSB is also a great school in a great location & recently ranked one of the top party schools in the nation. Good surf at campus point in the winter - drive some for kiting tho. Jalama is @ 1 hr. from SB, but some closer spots can work.

UCSC or cabrillo CC both in santa cruz are much closer to waddell than monterrey bay CC.

I went to UCSC for a bit. most beautiful college i have ever seen, redwood forests, views of the monterrey bay, open fields. Don't know if its as hippy as when i was there, but that aspect did get annoying at times. Never out of site of a hacky sack ring or out of ear shot of a drum circle, 1/2 the naked sun bathers were ok (guess which half). Good school, depending on what you want to do. good physics and astro, no engineering (take pre-reqs, then transfer to berkeley), good libral arts. of coarse things might be different now.

if you want the big name college thing, stanford is pretty close to 3rd avenue on the bay, and still within easy day trips to the coast. UC berkeley is also near a bunch of spots, and day trip to a bunch more.

UCSB if you're anything else or want to party more than anything else.

both have kite clubs that compete regionally.

When you say WC we assume you mean WA, OR, CA - all very different places to live with different costs and opportunities. I lived in Corvallis then Hood River for the last ten years then moved to San Francisco area last year. I spent more time going out of town for work when I lived in the gorge, whereas here the season is much longer and I'm a half-hour from either Third or Santa Cruz. Everything has its trade-offs (I miss my gorge friends big time). Any city with density will have a bunch of smaller colleges too, and there's also the option of an online degree like Phoenix or ITT.

Your budget and goals are really what are going to drive your decision. Check on in-state versus out-of-state tuitions for state schools. California state schools used to be the best bang for the buck in education until the government pissed away all its money. CGCC is a great option if you're dead set on the Gorge! Oh wait, it's the only option. (Seriously, though, it's a great school and I hope to teach there someday).

While it'd be cool to find a school that gives you access to kiting, you still want to get an education that will buy you a job that will allow you to actually afford kites. You could always get an aerospace degree at Stanford so you can kite at Third and then graduate and move to the gorge to design drones for Insitu. Wink
