Hey All ,
I see the seasons going well and so was mine . Built my own strapless and was just loving the learning of it . I was able to ride it both ways but knew i wanted to learn to jibe , thanks for the instructional video Nick .
Then "Murphy's Law " took over . I went out on my jet boat alone last weekend up the North Saskatchewan River , I went an hour and a half upstream and back just to fish , float and enjoy . The river level was high no worries . I went back home to Devon and found the boat launch busy so downstream I went to kill some time and let the launch area clear up some . On my way back west to town looking into the sun and honest I didnt see it coming BANG I hit a rock . This sent me flying to the right of the boat and when it landed it veered to port , I couldn't lift myself to get to key to shut down . In the blink of an eyes time the boat struck the bank and came to a stop. I'm busted up badly .
Rescue service called as my right leg was not on the same plane as the left and didn't want to work anymore . My hed was bashed good on the window frame and I couldn't see for a while but could hear people and see black and white shapes , thank goodness this cleared after a few minutes . I was transferred to a rescue boat taken back like 5 min. from my home launch to an awaiting air ambulance Helicopter .After all said and done 6 ribs broken ,right collar bone broken and best of all my right femur broken ( no wonder my leg was positioned so funny) !
I was released yesterday and the surgery was done Tuesday , hows that . A nail in my leg from my hip to the knee .
They said " your doing fine Jack , it's amazing " Do you want to go home ? Sure I said . ,not realizing that the pain I was feeling was substantially dulled by the every four hrs a shot of morphine . We can only give you T3s Jack so off i went . Wow does it hurt now that I'm only on the T3s !
What can we learn from this ? well thanks to board sports mainly kiting ! I've given up smoking and drinking excessively so my health is good for an older guy . That was in my favor the Doctor told me , for my age .
I truly am amazed at the help I recieved from the citizens at the scene , so there are still good people out there man ! Never take safety for granted always double check your situation .
Stay safe , and enjoy your season everyone, sorry for me I cant make a trip to Oregon this year .

It's cool that you are pulling some positive from this experience. This could have happened to anyone.

Good on ya,

Damn dude! That sounds pretty brutal. Glad you still have all your pieces/parts and are on the road to recovery. Morphine has got to be the best stuff ever made!

Jack,

That sounds horrible! I wish you a speedy recovery. See you next season here in Oregon or somewhere else warm in the Spring. It was great meeting you this year in SPI.

Jack,
Tough stuff. Exactly a year ago our son broke his femur MX riding the dunes in Christmas Valley. It was 3 hours before they could fly him out and set his leg without any pain killers. We were 5 days at the hospital in Bend, mostly ER because of complications. The doctors told him it could be 3 years until the pain is gone and worst of all is what the use of painkillers has done too him. It's real tough getting them when you're still in pain. Be very careful and keep people around you that can help you with this. He did snowboard twice this Spring but has yet to go back to kiting. Good luck and a speedy recovery.
