I am slightly more advanced than a beginner but still relatively incompetent when it comes to kiting in the gorge....

In any case, today I crashed and my kite went down. Within a second or so I realized that the bar was 15 yards away and the kite was just being held by my leash. I thought that the quick release must have failed and set the bar free. After quite an ordeal including two tows by a guy named Bill (thanks Bill) I finally made it back to shore.

Back on shore, low and behold, the quick release was intact. Everything about it was fine. The only conclusion I can reach is that the chicken loop unhooked itself from the bar during the crash. Is that likely? Is there any other possibility?

The answer may lie in the size of your chicken dick? If you bought your stuff used the previous owner could have shortened it so that he could unhook more easily - but cut it too short, thus the premature loss of your kite.

you probably just came unhooked. What stopped you from reeling the back back in and relaunching?

This is why after launching you should ride suicide or hook to the sheeter strarp, with some kites when you go to the safety there's no way to relaunch.
