I know this is odd, but I am looking to switch teams. I am interested in swapping my kiting gear for windsurfing gear. I am clueless as far as what I will need.
I have two boards, Liquid Force and Schroder. And three kites, 13 Bularoo, 5 and 10 Waroos, all bought new in 2008 from New Wind.
If anyone is interested or knows someone, message me.

Before you do this switch. Have you taken lessons? Getting into Hood River style shortboarding can be quite a process. But very much cheaper that kiteboarding lessons. If you are getting bored with kiting, try the coast. If this is a kitemare issue, I understand. My first kiteboarding lesson in Hood River started with an kiter, flying into my kite in the first 3 minutes. Ouch. Kitebeach is a zoo! You should probably post on a windsurf forum for better info. Most kiters do not have a clue about windsurfing.

Generally kiting equipment gives you a better wind range and skill duration, so what you pick up for windsurf gear depends on 1) your current skills and 2) what conditions you'll spend your time in. The stuff you buy to learn on you may grow out of sooner than hoped. Lessons in the Gorge is a good idea (Big Winds or Brian's I hear good things about). And yeah, it's safer than kiting, on the whole.
I don't know that you'll have the best luck swapping your kite gear for the right boards/sails/masts/booms, maybe just sell it and use the money to buy the right gear, though there are more windsurfers swapping into kiting than the other way around. Hang around the windsurf shops in the Gorge and ask lots of questions - Windance, Big Winds, Surf House - you won't find a tighter collection of the most knowledgeable windsurfers anywhere else (barring maybe Maui).
And don't let any kiter-only people give you shit... windsurfing rocks. Just ignore all those 80's-era video clips they'll send you with the pink wetsuits and sappy pop music...  |

You can get very good windsurfing gear for very little money--period. Before you sell your kite gear, go to Second Wind and have Pepi see what he can do for you with some used gear, and excellent advice.
Super fun sport, but be advised that it's a much longer learning curve than kiteboarding. You will need to spend some serious hours to get any good.

I have about 13 sails ranging from 4.0-6.7 a Bic Techno E 135L wide style board and a Mistral beginner wide style board, 2 booms, 2 carbon masts, bunch of fins and a Chinook double bolt mast foot and extension.
Some of the sails are in better shape then others but they are all mid to late 90's era windwing, north, ezzy and a few other lesser known brands.
I'm located up in washington west of seattle. if you want more info let me know. I'd be interested in doing a trade for your kiteboarding gear.

I would suggest keeping the 10 and 13M kites for light winds.
Windsurfing will seem really boring in those conditions compared to kiting.
You should be able to get windsurfing gear for stronger winds really cheap.
Depending on your weight, sails from 3.0 - 5.0 should cover typical Gorge conditions (20-25mph and up) where windsurfing can offer some of the same thrills as kiting. |

I'm sure you'll have fun windsurfing, but in my opinion if you're not learning new things kiting you're not doing it right. There's so many styles of riding and different boards/kites it should be plenty fun no matter how good you are. Anyway, maybe consider mixing up your kiting spot/style/gear as well as learning to windsurf.

Windsurfing will certainly extend your river riding thrills here in the Gorge to year-round status if you become really good...... winter is all about windsurfing with a clean jibe.
So, learn to jibe really, really well if you go all winter..... you'll be out there having a blast for long sesh's all year. |
