Wed Jul 14, 10 11:38 am sure, but can you swim |
|
|
You have received your new 2011 quiver of 5 new kites and 3 new boards from your sponsors and you've donated all your 2010 gear to war orphans.
You've perfected a move that three CalTech physicists claimed was impossible only 2 years ago in a peer reviewed journal.
And you have the baddest board shorts on the water.
But could you swim to shore if you absolutely had to?
This year's Roy Webster Columbia River Cross Channel Swim will be Monday, Labor Day, Sept. 6 at 7 am. It's a great excuse to get into shape and prove to yourself and to others that you have the chops to survive in open water in a safe and friendly event. Bring your kites, swim in the morning, do an early lunch, and kite in the afternoon, make a day of it.

That's pretty bold. BigR is hereby exempt from having to demonstrate his swimming skills but still required to prove why he had to swim back rather than hitch a ride from Hwy 14. _________________ It's always happy hour somewhere in the world. |

Ya know it's true about swimming.
I swam age group as a kid and then in high school etc. water polo was fun, but what I really learned was how to "egg beater." Egg beater kick is like breast stroke kick but you move each foot independently. Learn it!
The skill of keeping your upper body erect in the water is helpful, very helpful when relaunching, self rescuing, and or gathering up stuff after a yard sale.
Here is a set of skills that all kiteboarders should have:
1. wade water unassisted for 5 minutes, head out and shoulder's just below surface(easy but takes egg beater kicking skills)
2. wade water holding a brick just barely above the surface for 1 minute.(hard)
3. swim a 1000 yards in less than 25 minutes.
4. wear a speedo and maintain manlyness
5. demonstrate each basic stroke: front crawl, back stroke, breast stroke and scissor kick, and side stroke.
It sounds like crap until you are out more than 1000 yards in any body of water, especially the Pacfic and you have to swim back in.
I'm gonna wear my speedo out on the spit tommorow,
Ron

LOL. I fear "manliness" in a speedo is highly subjective. Trust me when I say that nobody needs to see me in one of those. Scissor kick skill is definitely valuable but I must be lazy b/c I choose to wear a pfd in the water.
25 min to swim 1000 yards sounds like a decent goal. I would also advocate that a good kiteboarder should be able to finish the Roy Webster swim in less than 35 min (d = 1.1 miles as the crow flies). I fully intend to be out of the water in less than 30 min this year.
There. I've made my the challenge, step up folks. _________________ It's always happy hour somewhere in the world. |

I'll wear my shaded swim goggles so as not to be blinded by your awesomeness. _________________ It's always happy hour somewhere in the world. |
