Thu Jul 08, 10 3:42 pm Wind on northern coast July 9-14? |
|
|
Hi , I am wondering if anyone has advice regarding where I might find some wind for kiting over next four days? I am visiting from BC and camping around Newport. Ikitesurf says 10-15 knots . Is this usually enough tO get out? Would heading n to manzanita or s to Florence work better? Or should we go to the gorge? Also , any shops around that
rent surf style kiteboards?
Thanks for any advice |

Tough one to call on the coast this weekend. Looking to be stronger towards the later part of your vacation and it doesn't appear that there will be much of an advantage to going north to Manzo, or down south. Newport might be the best spot to camp out. The northern coastal waters shows some good news for Mon-Tues so that may be the call.
Tonight...W wind 5 to 10 kt...becoming NW 10 to 15 kt in the evening. After midnight wind veering to N 5 to 10 kt with gusts to 15 kt. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 5 ft at 9 seconds. Patchy fog.
Fri...N wind 5 to 10 kt. Gusts up to 15 kt in the afternoon. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 4 ft at 9 seconds. Patchy fog in the morning.
Fri Night...NW wind 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 5 ft at 9 seconds. Patchy fog after midnight.
Sat...NW wind 10 to 15 kt. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 5 ft. Patchy fog.
Sat Night...NW wind 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt...easing to 5 to 10 kt after midnight. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 5 ft. Patchy fog through the night.
Sun...N wind 5 to 10 kt...becoming NW 10 to 15 kt in the afternoon. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 6 ft. Patchy fog in the morning.
Sun Night...NW wind 10 to 15 kt...becoming N 5 to 10 kt after midnight. Gusts up to 20 kt. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 6 ft. Patchy fog after midnight.
Mon...N wind 15 to 20 kt. Wind waves 4 ft. W swell 8 ft.
Tue...NW wind 15 to 20 kt. Wind waves 4 ft. W swell 8 ft.
The gorge is supposed to go nuts this weekend based on the latest I read.
I know you can demo kite surfboards at Cleanline in Seaside. Not sure about Oregon Surf Shop in Lincoln City but probably there too. |

Things have perked up for the coast and downgraded for the gorge, Mon-Tues still looking good too w/a 10' swell. With patchy fog mixed in the forecast, the coast will probably be zonal for wind and sun. Check the satellite shots for where there is clearing. Manzo usually good for these types of forecasts.
Going to the gorge this weekend for KB4C but will be chompin for that good wind and swell when I get back...
Today...N wind 10 to 15 kt. Local gusts to 20 kt in the afternoon. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 5 ft at 8 seconds. Patchy fog in the morning.
Tonight...N wind 15 to 20 kt. Wind waves 4 ft. NW swell 6 ft at 9 seconds...building to 8 ft at 9 seconds after midnight. Patchy fog after midnight.
Sat...N wind 15 to 20 kt...becoming NW 10 to 15 kt in the afternoon. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 7 ft at 7 seconds. Patchy fog through the day.
Sat Night...NW wind 15 to 20 kt...becoming N 10 to 15 kt after midnight. Wind waves 4 ft... Subsiding to 2 ft after midnight. NW swell 5 ft. Patchy fog through the night.
Sun...N wind 10 kt...becoming NW in the afternoon. Wind waves 2 ft. NW swell 6 ft. Patchy fog in the morning.
Sun Night...N wind 15 to 20 kt. Wind waves 4 ft... Subsiding to 2 ft after midnight. W swell 7 ft. Patchy fog after midnight. Slight chance of drizzle after midnight.
Mon...N wind 15 to 20 kt. Wind waves 4 ft. W swell 10 ft.
Tue...N wind 15 to 20 kt. Wind waves 4 ft. W swell 10 ft. |

The forecast looks pretty damn good to me but perhaps I am just being optimistic. I don't live on the coast but it seems that based on my experience and the experience of others, if its marginal, Manzo always seems to be a little windier than everyone else.
If you decide to come up north, we are camping at the barview jetty campground. Site u18 or something to that effect. Look for a blue matrix, a pickup truck with kite stickers, a newer dodge SUV (green?) or a non descript RV.
Even if there is no wind I'm bring the unicorn winch so we can tow in to some shore break on skims and skates which should be fun for the whole family _________________ Bury me standing cause I won't lay down!!
