Agree with what Monkey said....no one had ill will for him at the time of the accident, it was the words spoken after that did the damage to his reputation.

Agreed, but there is also a point where the cumulative effect of incidents (or the lack there of) since the KK episode should nullify the impact of one incident on the public's perception of kiteboarding. Time heals all wounds

Insurers need to go back 24+ months to cite one incident to support their argument? An incident that was blown out of proportion by the media and fueled by an interview that can only be described as a PR disaster? I see that as an argument for lower rates.

As time goes by I think your reaction will change from disappointment to humor when you look back on this incident. It created quite a comical uproar at the time and I learned some new turtle jokes. The media went on a cartoonish feeding frenzy and RickI (self appointed Safety Czar of kiteforum fame)had his greatest safety orgasm to date. Dont forget the "I like turtles" boy.

Yes, we all make mistakes. KK's was VERY public and not well thought out. It is a good lesson for all that words matter. KK will overcome this infamy like many other who have done worse in life.

I would bet that KK has learned from this incident and is safer to kite around than many other kiters who have not developed a healthy respect for the power of a kite.

with re: to insurances and demos. the tort system in america is seriously messed up. kk didn't help matters, but your theory here is that the giant flying kites would have otherwise escaped notice indefinitely?

with re: to the interview. wasn't he still suffering from a brain injury? he went on the air with a seasoned pro, who clearly enjoyed it when kk sounded stupid. who knows how the tv show prepped (i.e. set up) their subject (aka their mark) for that one?

sounds more like a sad commentary on journalstic ethics to me. don't blame kk for the sensationalistic media.

im not saying kk is some sort of role model. but you guys are rounding off on him like a pack of 8th grade girls. i prefer it when kiters bring the mellow. rodney king, where are you?

rant off. Very Happy

I think you want to have his baby...

In the NWKITE spirit of piling on: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=5647429&page=1

decide for yourself - the GMA interviewer didn't seem too hard hitting (cept for playing that clip 6 times - damn you sensationalistic media with your sound & images & whatnot)

did seem like he had his brain functioning

strange you didn't hear

1. I was a dumbass
2. thank everyone who helped me
3. I'm really sorry

I'd hope my handlers would put that on my notecard if i was beyond drooling wheatena...

Important note... there were many other kiters on that beach that day in the same conditions, who all safely rode and then went home, instead of the hospital... so don't immediately blame the weather on this one...

Tekko makes a key point to the whole story because The Turtle made a kiting mistake and then poured gas on the fire during the interview. Not a good 48 hour ride for ol' Kev during his 15 minutes of fame.

In defense of KK we all make flying errors daily and realize in a split second Mother Nature will bite you but I am so thankful he didn't kill himself because we would probably still be burning him in effigy in the place where we used to ride called "The Sandbar."

Tough call, but if the ripple effect impacted the insurance side of business to Demo Days that sucks because they were a good time for the kiting community and local economy. Plus some people don't realize kiting now in certain parts of Florida is an insurance and certification waiver "fly certain flags" on your kite bullshit nightmare that is maybe why Turtle headed to the Evergreen state because he was tired of the beatdowns in the FL parking lots.

I'm fairly certain that the 2 year insurance analogy is pretty bunk. The event received natinal attention and as per the testimony of those in the industry, jacked kiteboarding inti the potentially leathel category of sport activities. Same as recreational flying, deep sea diving, hang gliding, etc. "hey Dave, you get that memo? We can insure kiteboard demos now. Ooh? Why is that? Two years have gone by, the sport is no longer dangerous.

Hard hitting media interview? You might want to watch the clip again. The lady was clearly concerned and then in disbelief when he said "oh definately I would do it again"

he was kiting when a fucking hurricane was making landfall!! Nah, that's not a poor decision

eh, agree to disagree i guess.

i looked at that whole thing and thought

--> why is this even a big story?
--> the interviewer is pysyched he sounds so dumb, but smart enough not to show it.

not debating that he acted stupid launching in those conditions.

whatever, he shows up at the beach i'll be polite, but not bromantic

Broken pulley on my leading line - kite looped uncontrollably as connected to 3 lines. Cabrinhas have got the same riley pulley as do many other kites. This has happened to more people out in the water. I was underpowered and riding a surfboard all day so the squall gust was a suprise. I said no to howard stern, msnbc & some kind of vacation disaster show to get out of the news even tho they were offering me to ride again on tv and more money.

I dont really care what you people say it just sucks I didnt know it was the pulley that broke when I was offered 10k toward a hundred thousand dollar hospital bill to go on tv prematurely. again they quoted me at 100,000 as i left the hospital for 24 stitches. Was pretty awesome to be forced to sell half yer soul you should try it too. thanks for all the support. I mean that legitimately to some people but the few posts I saw on here make me want to steal your waves and your women

PJC you are spot on.

As someone in healthcare I am well aware of the effects an incident like this. What counts is what he said later.

That interview was done way to soon, he was still on heavy drugs and was incoherent because of them. The media was really classless to interview him at that time. It was bad for us, the sport and good for the media. Fuck THEM.

I don't think the media is evil, I just think they are naturally self-serving. They know how to avoid sounding stupid on TV and ordinary folk don't.

My point is simply KK didn't have "handlers" looking out for him.

I think the important thing to remember is that it's our responability as Americans we need to not take responsability for our actions.

In kevins case, the accident was clearly caused by a broken pulley (that's why he was lofted straight up in the air at first) Gusts happen and sometimes just out of the blue. You guys act like he was out kiting as a hurricane was making landfall or something? Any instructor will tell you that storm fronts are safe to kite in if it is the only wind you have.

Bottom line, whatever, it hasn't affected me or my beach access. I think the point is there is something to be said about just coming out and saying "it was a very risky situation, I rolled the dice and got bit. I'm sorry about all the negative impacts that the publicity caused".

Ya fucked up, everyone does, just own it and I think you'll find by doing so it goes away much faster. Explanations just breed more questions, analysis, and finger pointing

Handlers? The guy gets out of the hospital with a brain injury and no money and its his fault because he doeasn't have handlers? Thats what journalistic ethics is all about! Journalism is supposed to inform us not mislead us for profit. This country is so fucked.
