That's Kevin Kearney. I think everyone agreed that dumb ass was the most applicable name. Hey, I'm kiting in a hurricane I think I'll walk on the beach with my kite at 12 o'clock. Bitchin kite loop though; too bad he hit a building

Just learned this weekend that KK... aka 'I pulled a kiteloop across the road dumb ass' has moved out of Florida and is now living in the Seattle area...

Kind of freaked out some of the Jetty Island locals when they learned who he was the first day he rocked up at the beach.

Great ambassador for the sport... now in our own backyard...

Most TV coverage of kiteboarding in the USA, ever...

Important note... there were many other kiters on that beach that day in the same conditions, who all safely rode and then went home, instead of the hospital... so don't immediately blame the weather on this one...

Dumb ass for sure.

Funniest thing I've read in a long time is when Gman recently commented if Kearney would have been unhooked it would have been more legit considering his kite position was excellent.

To be fair, he's probably learned not to park his kite at 12 o'clock by now.

I'll say the same thing I said on PSKite:

Carrothead on PSKite wrote:

I think if he had a negative affect on kiteboarding's rep, the damage has been forgotten about outside the kiting world. Time to forgive within the community as well. I'm sure he has paid for his crimes enough, and it seems awfully petty to continue to harbor contempt for him from a distance after two f#%$ing years.

Unfortunately if you ever have to speak with your insurance agent about kiteboarding issues or possible policies, Kevin Kearney is very fresh in the mind of the insurance policy makers.
That 3minutes on CNN were all that it took to provide kiteboarding a formal introduction to the business world.
I have personally had 3 meetings with insurance agents in which they brought up a discussion regarding that specific incident. The follow up interview was just as damning for the sport.

Seriously, for people on the business end of this sport, it was a dark time.

This is specifically one of the biggest reasons no shops can offer kite demos, no insurance policies will allow it, unless you go to extreme lengths for specific events insurance with costs nothing less than $400/day to obtain at best.

This is also why demos have to cost money, to cover the insurance and the liability permitting. And, also why the CGKA does not have the support to run annual demos.

Sorry, I am now off my soapbox. Just needed an opportunity to vent. Expand, contract, expand, contract, now exhale slowly......

flamming or not, stupid is as stupid does. I mean, shit man, he's on the darwin award list. Laughing I really could care less about where this guy is. The question was posed bad name or bad ass . I thought dumb ass was a little more applicable.

Yeah, shit happens. Just like the bumper sticker said. But like most, I thought the TV interview afterward was a little more telling into who Kevin is. No apology, no explanation, no thank you to those that rescued him... instead we are treated to stories of turtles and "oh definitely, I would go out again" hell, not even a little remorse ?

I mean, what the hell dude? Would I run away from him on the beach? Probably not. Would I run up to introduce myself? Probably not either.

Probably the one and only guy I can put on the do not demo list Laughing

Agree with what Monkey said....no one had ill will for him at the time of the accident, it was the words spoken after that did the damage to his reputation.
