to morbidly sit and watch from a safe distance a fool with no harness and a wrist leash have his girlfriend hot launch his kite for him? Oh yeah, this was after she hot launched it and was tangled in the lines. Scary shit on the coast. |

...only if you didn't warn him.
We usually give people heads up that what they are doing might not be so smart...if the spot is reasonably safe, and they continue... |

common stuff - usually just nicely make some suggestions (if ignored pull up a chair and some popcorn)
if by-standers are in danger - you may have to be a citizen get in someone's face _________________ Go Deep!

Depends on what you're going to say to him. If you're willing to show him how to do it right then yea, you should say something. Otherwise, I'd say he probably wasn't to bad off with no harness and a leash if there was no one else downwind of him. |

Important point!
...if you read the Cali forums, they are constantly battling to keep access rights on their crowded beaches.
Even on our remote coastline, if some beachcomer gets taken out by a kite and complains to the city....watch out!

we had some guys come to the beach...it was a day when I hesitant to pump up my 10 (this is way way back)...and they had a brand spanking new 16. They started inflating it by mouth...we all went over several times, and at the end, they screamed at me telling me to f#$k off. It is the first (and last) time I've seen a hot launch of 16 meter kite in that much wind....the guy was lucky though..after a short airborn slam the kite went into the tress and absolutely disintegrated...at least he could walk somewhat.
Never seen them again after that.
We had another guy, that didn't know how to control the kite, we tried helping him, suggesting taking a trainer out until he would get it. Not listening he gets drug over the grass + spikes...we save him right before some bushes, and reiterate our thought that he might be better off with a trainer..the guy just smiled, and set up again...with exactly the same result.
These days it is not necessary to go through what the pioneers of the earlier days went through...but if people are interested in saving $100 instead of just having safe fun with an instructor at least we have to make sure they aren't hurting anyone else... |

Walking back from a good day of kiting, I see a couple trying to launch a big, under inflated kite. The guy has a harness, no wetsuit, and sandals. He's maybe 150' upwind of the 10' rock levee in slick mud. So I ask if I can help and he basically tells me to f#$@ off. So I warn the civilians on the path that a kites may be headed their way. Sure enough hot launch, slip in the mud and I yell for him to release. Course he had no idea where the release was. He hits the bottom rocks and bounces all the way up to the path. Broken leg, arm and lots of blood. |

If some dumbass ends up hurting himself out of ignorance, pride and stupidity, then it is probably a good lesson learned especially if refusing advice by a knowledgeable kiter.
What is important is to make sure no one else gets hurt, like unsuspecting tourists, from kiting stupidity. This is what will lead to kiting regulations and/or beach closures. Be ultra friendly and nice to tourists as to cast a favorable light on kiteboarding and the people involved in the sport. It is great for tourists and beach spectators to view the extreme end of our sport from a safe vantage point on the beach as riders push the limits out in the water. But don't do stupid shit on the beach with non-kiters in close proximity as a mishap could ruin beach access and make kiters look like the ego jerks that don't care about others.
Stay safe on the beach and go nuts in the water...

My wife and I often sit on the dune parking at Iredale and watch valley kiters launch and land their kites in the middle of crowds of Ft. Stevens beach combers and children building sand castles.
On those days we usually opt out of kiting just because we are so disgusted, concerned, and not interested in dealing with the chaos.
Honestly...it pisses us of.
Self launching and landing kites around little kids, dogs, innocent people.
Some of these guys spend more time working on their riding ATTIRE more than their riding etiquette.
80's style boardshorts and cool stickers on your board?----check.
Self launching and landing your kite in the middle of a crowd of people----idiot.
We don't want any beach shut down so it's a good point slither made.
Have some common sense.
It's dangerous enough to put your own life out in the waves----don't put others in danger too. _________________ SPACESTICK
