Is da Hood sandbar a family friendly spot. Meaning the kiters in the family can let it rip but there is also a family friendly spot nearby for non kiters to watch and splish splash in the water. If not the hood, where else?

If you go to the event site (the sight that is located directly west of the sand spit) spectators can watch and stay out of the way. Its a big grassy area.

Best spot for spectator viewing: Stevenson. Also kids play in the water in the wind shadow. More of a teen hangout on the dock. (Rocky beach.)
Best place for kids to play while you ride: Jones Beach. (Under adult supervision.) Caveat: the wind can get ripping and then it's a sandblast extravaganza...  |

| The event site is a great spot for the family to hangout. Nice grassy area, other kids around and a few little food stands. Plus its only about a 5 min walk into town. |

Theres a nice park at the marina with a sandbar for the family....and waterfront park near the event site has a cool playground for the kiddies.

brand new sweet family beach with roped off play pool just west of event site. kid friendly climbing wall/ playground too. the beach is sheltered from the nuking wind and resulting sandstorm.

Hood River is a great family spot.
Jones beach does not seem that great to me... Too many 4 wheelers flying around at 50 mph. |

The 4 wheelers have never been a problem with me... Maybe I've just been lucky? I say Jones because of the shallower water (in one spot), sandy beach and warmer water. (In the Summer at least.) It's a fun spot to take the family too, for me anyways. Of course, in the afternoon when the wind gets really good, everyone wants to leave.  I try and tell 'em a little sandblasting is good for the skin. That treatment would probably cost hundreds at a spa! |

I would say the Hood is the most family friendly spot for sure. The event site, marina, and the new park are all great places. Also, when you go missing for 4 hours on the water (gee, that would never happen) the family can go into town and get food and ice cream and just hang out.
The only thing to do at Jones is swim, get sand in everything, and if your fortunate enough, you can view the crimson throated homo sapien (homo sapien spp. coastalensis) in its native habitat.

the event site is a real good spot to relax and watch wind sports. they have some good eats close by too.
hood river definitely the most family friendly, but drive a little east to rufus for some top shelf kiting and the cove there is wind protected and makes for a nice area to watch the little ones play in the water. not much out there though compared to HR when it comes to other things like dining,stores,etc.
same goes for roosevelt. pack everything in. roosevelt can make for a real nice family weekend of camping and kiting.

If you dont mind a drive...flora's lake is super fun camping/kiting for a family.

Sauvie Island is a great place for kids too. And too much wind is hardly every a problem

Awesome! Thanks for the 411. I was thinking the sandbar and event site area would be too crowded with kiters and windsurfers. But Im glad you cleared that up for me and gave me some great other ideas as well.
Hope to see you this summer. My smallest kite is a 10 meter so I guess Im going shopping.

The Event Site is where it's at. At your disposal you have:
1. wading in the Nichol's Boatworks bay
2. AWESOME new kid's park 200 yds to the west
3. Downtown with Mike's Ice Cream, library, toy store, another kids park 10 minute walk to the south.
4. Marina beach 10 minute walk to the east.
If you need the names and numbers of some really good baby sitters/kid watchers let me know. I have been teaching in Hood River for 21 years.. I got names and I got numbers.
And yes, you will need a kite smaller than a 10.
