After looking at Gmans board in the ARUBA post I starting thinking about a board to travel with.....cheaply. It would have to fit in the NSI bag which will acomodate a board that is 4'8" and up to 20" or so wide.

Im thinking of a board more surf orientated rather than kite, even though it will most likely only be kited. Something like the Channel Island POD. Something with a bit of volume to the wave can do most of the work and not the kite.

Anybody have any thoughts on boards that are made for this type of use or is it all going to be custom?

cheers,

At that size they make some smaller directionals (all makes)
Good upwind and multi taskers~!

Not hyping the North brand but my friend rides this and likes it, athough it's 5'10 so longer than your board bag maybe?

Placebo Man 4' 10 surf skate Very Happy It is super light weight and rips in light wind . I put some nsi pads and straps on it but mostly use it strapless. It is a wicked cruising board that fits in an NSI board bag. Very Happy

Not a coincidence both of these boards come from West Palm Beach home of strapless master Jon Modica:

Dereck can build you anything you like for around $650 - at 4'8" it is going to be a compromise of performance vs float (shorter thicker board is not going to drive like a longer thinner board) i find a huge difference between 4'8 and 5'5

the DC boards are really well built - so far has washed up on the dry reef 4 times this trip (using those sneaks) and watched it bounce off a rock it hit square with no dings (probably destroy it today....)

Here is the solution:

Take your regular board and don't worry about it.

That air bag is awesome - thanks! Just picked up a 5'7" Bullet and have been looking for something to fly it in. The Bullet is only 2009 so there may be good closeout deals around. (Have only ridden swell and haven't a chance at the coast with it yet so I'll let a better rider review, and I'm sure a million board recommendations would ensue).

The Y Quad board by Catch Surf travels well, is very light and pretty indestructible. Also tons of fun to ride, works great in mushy surf and is my go to board on light wind days (12m/14m) as it goes upwind like a rocket!:

http://www.catchsurf.com/surfboards/product_info.php?cName=surfboards-yquad&products_id=8

Comes in 5', 5' 6", 6', 6' 6"

They also have a 54" fin-less / single fin board that looks like it would be a blast. Some videos on the site showing it being used for regular surfing.

Link to post with pics and info on the board from last spring: http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-12056.html

A few more of the locals have been trying it out down here and so far everyone who has comes back with a huge grin and are amazed at the upwind ability.

Hi, I have a 2008 Naish Custom 147cm Bullet (fits in NSI bag) in mint condition for sale out of Coeur d'Alene for $375 firm if you're interested. It was designed ny Robbie as his pro model for just what you are describing. Surfs and boosts. Has volume so it can easily be jibed and do the work and boost without dinging or breaking. PM me if you're interested.
