Just a word of caution about hiring a big gun lawyer that charges five hundred bones an hour.

Think about what you are fighting over. A family law court room is not the place to be fighting over principles or getting into a pissing match with yer ex. That takes a lot of time from the lawyer and it can get exceptionally expensive!

More than one person hired a big gun lawyer and came out bust after going to court. I've seen it from both sides. One lawyer says - hey, don't take that offer, we can do much better in court. I'll argue that she shouldn't get any alimony and you get the house and blah blah blah. Yeah, thats what the lawyer will argue - but he can't guarantee anything. no one can. Court is a gamble. A family law lawyer who gets paid by the hour has everything to gain and not much to lose by going to court - he gets paid more by spending more time prepping for court. Not all lawyers are bad - but some are influenced by the fact that they need to make money to pay the bills and by convincing their client to roll the dice and go to court will help them meet this goal - then thats exactly what they will do.

Stepping down from my soap box here.

Just trying to say - be cautious about racking up lawyer fees - sometimes the fees are higher than what you are fighting for.

I hear that!!! I would get invoices form my attorney that had line items like phone call .12 hours = $95. That's when I decided to stop calling him unless it was completely necessary.

But Moto has good advice for sure, try to settle out the little shit amongst yourselves or your attorneys will be buying new kite gear and go-joes with your money. If you want to be "mr. hard ass" and battle over every little detail, your day in court is going to cost you as much as a new car..and you may not get shit.

Even though it is very rare for Oregon court's to award alimony (from what my attorney said anyways) another favorite divorce quote from Chris Rock about alimony...

"Lifestyle that she has grown accustomed to?" "Grown accustomed to?"
"well your honor, I've grown accustomed to getting a blow job at least once a week, how bout you but that in the court order?"

If that was the case I dont think there would be divorce or war for that matter.

If anyone wants candid confidential advice about a family lawyer or mediator's reputation in the Portland area, feel free to give me a call - my office number is 503.531.9109.

My law practice is now limited to "collaborative family law" and mediation but I have litigated many cases over the years and am happy to give candid feedback to help people weigh their options. Sounds like collaborative method is probably not a good fit for Marina's friend, but may be a good option for families looking to avoid costly and painful court battles.
