Taking a trip to Cancun area end of February and wondering if anyone has a tip or two. Thinking of renting a board to save airline fees and wondering if there are kiteshops around there. Saw a couple kite schools on the net. Average Feb/March windspeed? Thanks. |

I kited down in tulum which is a couple hours south last january and the wind was really light. You could probably leave the small stuff at home. Get a deceiver/golf bag and fly your own board. I had no problems last year. |

I second what stagecoach said. Was in Tulum in November, 14-16m conditions. Kind of weak as far as fun kiting goes, but the warm turquoise waters and jungle scenery is nice! |

Heading down in June for 2 weeks to Cozumel & Isla Blanca.....anyone got beta on conditions that time of year--what about you Phil, didn't you get hitched down there?
Prolly going to ship the kites/boards since we're flying US airways and they're complete a**nuts with baggage. |

Just went down to Isla Blanca in December. The lagoon is butter, the bugs are insatiable the kids selling gum are non existent. About 30 min north of the hotel zone. Sketchy road to the kitespot and sand that doesn't allow a 2wd car to escape if you try to venture off the path. Cool place to stay (sans bugs) just before Ikurus Kite School, $50 a night right on the beach but no food tho. In a little closer to the hotel zone is where we ended up after we got tired of the bugs, closer to the real Mexican food too. Beter than a 11m needed. |

March - Apr are best (but you can get wind or get shut out anytime)

Please to define assnuts...I'm heading the LV in three weeks on US Airways (to Cabo) and bringing my Deceiver bag with three boards/kites (and maybe a putter). What was your experience? |

I was in Cancun in late Feb/early March two years and had amazing kiting- on my 9 and 11m revs- used my 14 T2 once or twice. I was there for work so I was stuck in Cancun proper- I was surprised at how good the wind was- much more reliable than when I was there before in December. I've also been to Holbox and Tulum- which are way better places than Cancun. You can go to Isla Blanca too if you have a car.
You don't need a 7 unless you're a featherweight. Bring the board though- unless you can guarantee a cheap board rental when you're there. In Cancun I'd launch in front of the Hilton, in Tulum I kited on the main beach and down south in the Si'an Kaan refuge there's endless deserted beaches. You're timing's good though- that's when the winds are more reliable then.
the water was so clear that I initially had problems landing my jumps as I couldn't tell where the water started! Enjoy |

Just got back from 9 days around Cancun. Got some great beta on nwkite, had to pass on some updates..
Had wind about half the time, rode 7m briefly, otherwise 9m/11m Isla Blanca/Tulum/Puerto Moreles/Punta Allen.
Isla blanca:
Hacienda Punta Sam is boarded up.
A bit turned off by the Ikarus guy so he didn't get our 2x50 pesos, just drive 2 minutes north until road is covered in sand and then kite upwind oceanside to get to the most flat water I've ever seen.
Wave spot with the right wind:

Onshore wind at Tulum, rode 5 miles in one reach to kite Tulum ruins.
Easy to find internet to check conditions/forecast:

Thanks for the tips - I'm heading to Tulum next week - I definitely will check out the wave spot you have shown. Is the wind as strong in Tulum as it is in the Puerto Moreles area? Planning to skip Isla Blanca as it does not look like a nice place for the wife to hang. |

Nooooooo!!!!!! Big mistake! You need to go past Ikarus & go through the Restraunt parking at the North end. The restraunt up there is super cool & no mosquitos. You have to be on the ocean side of the isthmus before sunset to avoid the mosquitos. Ride @ Isla Blanca, meet riders from around the world, eat @ a cool local restraunt. Your wife can have fun for at least one day there.... Isla Blanca is unmatched flat water when it's on. Makes Isla de Coche look like massive chop, and Isla Coche is awsome flat!!!! Also, Isla Blanca has more reliable winds than Tulum. Check Windfinder. If Isla Blanca is showing 15 or better, it is a MUST do! |

Anyone have a favorite spot that they like to stay at? Looking for some reasonable accommodations anywhere on the Riviera Maya. |

Thanks for the tips Nak. Sounds like Isla is a must do/experience. From the pictures it did not look that great but I will check it out. Hopefully Wednesday. |
