If you are like me and do most of your kiteboarding during the warmer months of April to October, then what do you do to prepare for the new kiteboarding summer season?
Just want to get an idea what everyone else is doing to physically and mentally ready themselves for another season of wave bashing and full trottle riding in the surf. Mostly wondering if there are any secret recipes for getting ready to rip???
My list of cross-training this winter has been:
*2 to 3 days a week of weights at the local fitness center
*SUP long distance paddling on the Yaquina Bay and other local waters
*Surfing when the conditions are favorable
*Speed walking with the dogs on the beach
*Drooling over kiteboarding magazines with warm water photos of surf
*And of course bicep training by hoisting 12 oz cervesas in the evening after a long day of work or cross-training

Snowboard, snowkite, mt bike, rock climb, kite (more as it warms up). It's supposed to be fun unless you're training for the Olympics. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

I've been doing Crossfit here in Hood River with Jeri (twostates). Crossfit has reminded me of what I'm capable of physically, if I just work hard at it. It not easy and I damn near puke at the end of every workout, but Jeri is really good to remind me that I get out what I put in.
I know there is a Crossfit in Portland.

Skiing a bunch, gym thing when the conditions are not so good, some yard work, and of course the bicep curl thing with cervesas after the day is about done. I find the 12oz's are too light. I prefer to mix it up between 16 oz's and 24 oz's for optimal results. It keeps the body, mind, and liver guessing.
Keep up the stoke |

Any kiters out there using this cross-training system? I have a ski racer friend (Victor the Inflictor) who swears that this is the best balance and leg strengthening device out there.

I'm planning to install a kegorator. Not sure if exercising more or drinking more beer will help my kiting more. |

I work out at 24 hr fitness and it is pretty sweet to run into other kiters at the gym in the winter months - and they all say the same thing - "just getting ready for the summer".
Swimming laps is definately one way to get yourself ready for the kiting season. Helps keep you fit, your cardio up, strengthens the muscles you need for a long swim in.
Some other exercises that help are:
- Bent over rows. These will strengthen your rhomboids (spelling?), lats, lower back, and forearms (forearm strength is very important when curling 12 ounces or 24 ounces - whatever your preference).
- Cable chops and reverse cable chops - these will work your obliques (sp?) which strengthens your core.
- Sit ups. Combined with a strong lower back and obliques - add in the abs and you got yerself a strong core. A strong core helps with a lot of things - helps prevent injury, helps with balance - which will make pulling off tricks easier. Also, gives you more of an ability to hold down more power.
- Squats. Important for leg strength - which allows you to hold down more power in the gusts!!
I have a lot of ideas and excercises for kite strength - I could go into more detail if anyone is interested. _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights! |

I give out bad advice.

Wed Feb 03, 10 11:08 am Here's my winter training |
|
|
AM tennis 4 times per week.
Run 2 times per week(more like a jog).
Eat less fat
Drink less beer
Cross country ski, tele, or shnoboard every weekend
Eat less fat
Drink less beer
When the weather dry's up I'm going to mountain bike post canyon daily.
I've lost 20lbs since 11/30th.
My goal this year is to be able to reach down and grab my strapless surfboard without my fat ass stomach gettin in the way. This will allow me to do a front loop jibe strapless.
Cheers,
Ron _________________ Hey, I'm being hahahahahrassed! |

I thought that you wore your ankle weights when kiting to "hold down more power". Please share with us the thinking behind this again. _________________ Shhhhhhhhhhhh. . . |

Did you wear those diapers when you did this? Do they add to these mystical powers? _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights! |

Oh, I forgot to mention I expose my cojones to plenty of sunshine and water them regularly. Gotta make sure they're nice and big for the summer. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

That reminds me of this

as for exercise, I opted for boot camp.
Not as good at getting your body in shape as you would think, but I'm pretty sure my immune system can handle most anything the columbia and willamette can dish out... |
Even close contact with dead sturgeon? I think there's only one way to develop an immunity to that. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC
