Fri Dec 25, 09 5:32 am Puerto Rico February - Where to ride?? |
|
|
i received for xmas airfare for gf and i for PR in february, i know paul menta has the kitehouse on the far SW corner but my NON-KITING gf will kill me if we go there
she wants to be closer to san juan and beaches and restaurants and things to do (blah blah blah)
any suggestions where to stay? we will not have a lot of cash but she does want to stay in "something nice"
i could not fiind any suggestions on PR, i sorta remember reading something in KB mag' within the last 3 years on PR and it looked like there was riding near san juan right from the beach (i think)
appreciate your suggestions (except for dumping my nonkiting gf - lol)
kd
PS: i am a long-time rider, solid on surf board or twin tip, flat water or chest high waves |

Are you kidding? That should be one of the easiest places to convince your gf to go. The SW corner of PR is home to La Parguera, famous for its bioluminescent bay.
Plus PR isn't that big of an island. You can drive around the whole island in a single day (not that i'd recommend that...).
The south side doesn't get surf too often tho, so I'd expect flat water.
Also, the south side is the dry side and not as populated so expect more of a "cow town" feel.
If you were to spend a few days in San Juan and then a few days in La Parguera, I think you'd have a pretty good time.

There are quite a few places to hit. Try this place for cheap stay and right across the street from one of the ONLY places to kite right in San Juan. The kite beach is called Punta Las Marias and is located directly in front of this B & B.

My uncle owns the place and its a simple B & B in Condado part of San Juan. Stay away from the touristy hotels on the west part of Condado and Old San Juan since they tend to attract petty thieves. Just be aware out at night in San Juan.
Here is the only kite store in San Juan that I know of :

A great info. page with good BETA about some windy spots :

Here is windy spots map of the island :

I was born on the island and always caution people about the driving, which is like formula 1 racing with no rules, drinking allowed and encouraged !
About La Parguera. It is a very windy part of the island. This is a beautiful place that you should see. The kitesurfing is off-shore on small mangrove islands that are accessed by boat ONLY. Having said that it is an AWESOME place. Very unique flats type kiting in a picturesque backdrop. Its a must not miss. Your GF can go out to the islands and sun bathe on the boat or sit in a chair in the super shallow water.
Broneah runs a kite camp in La Parguera and they are A LOT more knowledgeable than P. Menta at Kite House, who I have NOT heard good stuff about.

-Other spots are Rincon (Surfers beach and Shacks). A very quaint fishing, surfing and now kite surfing town located in the NW corner of the island past Aguadilla when you leave San Juan.
A small surfing hamlet with good fresh fish, and friendly locals. Wind can be variable based on season. Best is March-April. Summer can also be good. If no wind, go surf !
Hope this helps,
