yeah but one camera shoots in Raw and the other prolly in jpegs or something. He obviously didnt correct either of the photos or you could easily tell the difference in the images between the 5d, and said shitty camera. For someone that is gonna use the 5d and shoot on auto mode or something I can understand the point here...
wait i dont have to explain this to Lance... haha. _________________ I heart dangling |

That's the trouble with Cannon, the glass $$ will f-en kill ya.
All the cams are great now...
I like Sony because they are in-body IS systems that support twenty years of classic Minolta glass.
look at the a700---soon to be discontinued.
Pretty sweet

I jsut bought a camera this summer and did ALLOT of research. Was bouncing back and forth between the canon 40D and the nikon D90. Although the d90 has video, I didn't see myself shooting video that much.
I went with the 40D as it fits in my hand much better and has a higher frame rate..which is nice. But in truth, it really is all about the lens. Bite the bullet and buy the best lens you can't afford.
The difference between my pretty good off brand lens and my canon L series 70-200 is really really noticeable. I would highly highly highly recommend it as your primary lens. not cheap, not light, but takes awesome shots and focuses fast as hell. Your going to drop about $900 for that one.
While a lens that has uber range on it is nice in theory, lens with a huge amount of range, unless they are VERY expensive often suffer from aberrations and slower focusing. The 18-200 lens cited above is nowhere near as nice of a lens as the 70-200. Not even close.
Other hints.. shoot everything in raw and learn howto use adobe bridge and camera raw. Much easier to post process your photos with camera raw as compared to photo shop. Bridge makes organizing your photos much easier.
If this is your first "real" camera foray into the digital world. You have to remember that just like film pictures that have to be exposed, adjusted, and printed. Your digital pictures will look MUCH better with some simple tweaks in adobe.
Oh yeah, you'll also want a decent bag (I love my lowe slingshot) and a decent polarizing filter, and a lens pen.
Have fun and don't stress about the body, it IS ALL in the lens!!! |

don't forget about the computer upgrade you'll need because each file is 35 MB and your current laptop won't have the storage capacity or horsepower, and the 6 gigs RAM necessary to do any post.
you'll want to upgrade your monitor too so you can have some idea as to what the image actually looks like.
and the redundant storage system for archiving. cause what if a drive fails?
that should roughly add on about another $7k to a camera purchase.
did we talk about software?

| That is the same case I took to africa. I really recommend them for traveling and hanging out on the beach. Totally water/dust proof and airline freindly. |

Can someone recommend a good digital photography magazine as a gift for a budding digi-photog? Prefer more how-to articles rather than a barrage of new product reviews.
One of these on Amazon? |

surfboy,
find a new cam yet? lots of good advice.
not sure what you can spend but if limited on budget, I would suggest you get a higher quality lens and a used body.
I like canon cameras so I'm a little biased. I was checking out that kenrockwell.com
man that website has tons of good stuff.
I like what lance said. I don't think that many buyers realize that with a camera upgrade, you'll be upgrading the other equipment too. Same with those HD camcorders.
hein, never read a magazine. I'd suggest you go to a camera store and ask them which one might be the best. I found the best way to help me progress was to meet other photogs and learn from them. those were the times I had breakthroughs with my work.
anyhow good luck with your decision.

Thanks everyone. Lots of good stuff, lots to think about. Still looking at options right now. The quality lens stuff sounds right on and if I have enough money I am going to go that route. Peace and happy holidays to everyone |

How do these cameras hold up at the sand spit? Can you even take them down to the sand spit? Will all the wind and water and sand and all the other crap thats around the spit fuck up the camera? What about the beach? Can you take these cameras down to the beach? _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights! |
