Have you been to La Ventana Baja before?

I'm planning to ride my motorcycle to La Ventana, camp out and learn to kiteboard. Hang out for a month or so and if I can fit all the gear on the bike ride down to Los Barriles and kite there too.
For those of you who have spent a bit of time down there I wanted to ask. How easy, reliable, or likely is it to buy used gear (kite, bar, lines, harness, board) used or fairly cheap there. Or would it make more sense to purchase last years new stuff off ebay and bring it with? And how easy is it to get by with just one kite, at 170 lbs I am hoping a 10m or 11m will benefit me the most?

plenty of good gear to buy down there. just enjoy your bike ride with a light load!
Don't forget the spare sparts!!!!!

Take a shorty and a harness that fits and you will be set.

Cali coast.
Board was horizontal, parallel with the street, bars are used just like a roof rack.

La Ventana is a great place to learn.

I know there are some peeps that will ride a motorcycle 1,700 miles thru a federale infested desert to go kiteboarding-- but c'mon. If you have a shiny bike with stateside plates; mexicans will love you. On the other hand; if you ride a beater down there; you won't have to worry about theft as much as making it the whole way.. and back.

Using a bike to get to the beach sounds great if you live a short ride.
Bottom line--Riding the baja 1... alone on a bike--not smart.
Find some folks on here; or whereever and at least caravan down; use two-way radios... be smart. Shit happens.

wha - motorcycling down the baja is courting death?

buddy of mine rode his bike solo all the way down and back a few years ago and had no problems. he's not exactly a harley's angel and speaks less spansih than me. i think some basic research and common sense is sufficient.

throw in some kiting and it sounds like a sweet trip. you could buy your gear down there, pay for lessons, and hire someone to haul it all back for you when you split.

It's only baja. Go for it on the bike, keep your head about you. Stay at decent places, pay in pesos, offer the host a cold beer, cold coke, it goes a long way. You'll have a great time. Just boogie through the north, it ain't worth lingering (though san quintin gets some sweet, solid wind. some great flatwater, oregon coastish waves).
