How hard can it be to do a simple upgrade from XP to Windows 7? Well pretty damn hard. I have to back up(buy new external hard drive) , reformat my drive, then load, then reinstall all my software, all 3rd party software must be reinstalled from disk.....

Why can't windows / microsoft play well with itself? AHHHHHHHH

It better be worth it.....

I have been running 7 for about a month, there isn't much difference between vista and 7. A couple cool features though and it does seem to be a faster os....

I haven't heard any complaints about 7 yet and I know a few people that are using it. some of them are pretty techy geeks too.

my take is, for XP users, 7 is pointless unless you're running a system with more then 4gb of ram and a core 2 quad or i7 quad core processor. or if for some reason like gaming you need directx 10 support.

but with that said. I've always had to reinstall regardless of upgrades at least once every couple years to clear the registry rot out of my pc. 7 will eventually become the new standard so either pick a good time to upgrade or buy a mac.

I can't decide yet if I'm going the mac route or not. they are nice but kinda insane on the price.

oh yeah...I'm still runnin XP too. none of that vista shiat.

MAC all the way-better platform, faster, software is better......and I use this one as my work computer-Exchange is fine, security is solid and easy, great with Iphone and BlackBerry.

MSFT lost themselves after they had cleaned up XP Professional (last solid, fast msft OX). The OS has gotten so bloated I lost interest in msft and moved to and iMac 4 years ago (after using one until Sophomore year of college). The MacBook with 4gb ram. It hammers thru pix, video, etc.....

I think unless your a power user who loves menus, extra options, sub menus, stacked os's, total control of the universe and have a streak of obsessive compulsive disorder, get a mac

keep your life and get a mac, it's just a computer not a test!

on the other hand.... if your a serious user doing real work with real software shiiiiit cant really beat a supercharged PC

oh my god I'm so confused I think I'll go reformat my pc hard drive and watch a movie on my mac

Okay, first, I'm a PC as Apple would label me. Through and through. I've been a software engineer for a long ass time on many different operating systems and a few different hardware platforms.

Mac is not a better platform, it is the *EXACT* same platform: X86 for 32bit and X64 for 64bit. Macs have X86/X64 Intel CPUs in them.

It's not faster, faster is a feeling not a fact.

The software is certainly not better, not even in the slightest, quality-wise it's far worse. Security wise, you have no protections from malicious websites like Vista or 7. Further, Apple has a horrible track record of acknowledgment and remediation of security issues from independent researchers.

Windows is for power users and Mac is for regular users, it's as simple as that. Pick accordingly.

The reason Mac users don't have upgrade issues like Mark is experiencing is because Apple rarely (more like never) updates/fixes their software.

One machine running nicely. One more to go. This one is a Vista machine and should be easier to upgrade.

Lucky this thread isn't on BAK or all the Apple kiters would be weighing in (there are lots). I've run XP sp2 for years on the few computers I have that don't run Linux, but I actually spent tonight helping my 73-year-old Mom with her Dell/Vista laptop. What crap!!!! I've never seen such a polluted and convoluted interface in my life. And no, I'm not a Mac user, never touched one and I think they're overpriced.

I pitched this idea to a Director at Qualcomm a few weeks ago and have talked to a few Directors at Google about the new generation of 'smartbooks' (instant-on grid-based laptops). I still think there's a huge untapped market for a simple, instant-on, easy-to-connect laptop with easy-to-read font and an easy email client and browser (Chrome rocks!) for the senior citizens. They seem to all be buying Vista laptops because they can't afford Macs on fixed incomes... nobody wins.

And all I want is a glare-proof smartbook with an accurate wind meter built in.

BTW, the reason most people think vista sucks is because security was priority number 1. Security and Usability are mutually exclusive, and you have to strike a balance. The UAC escalations are there to try and stop malware from changing settings on your system. If one of those prompts up when you weren't expecting, you can decline the action and know that your system is compromised. You can disable UAC but then you're not as protected. Now don't go all crazy on me saying malware only affects Windows, you're a fool if you believe that.
