| We are planning a cruise next year that originates from Puerto Rico and are planning on hanging out on the Island for a few days. Has anyone ever kited there and know where to go. We will need to stay in a bay as we are not good enough for the surf yet. Thanks! |

...Just did a quick search to jog my memory of places visited & kited in Puerto Rico in 2005. Although old, this link appears to be well representative of what I remember of the goods...and them goods were very good; definitely hit La Parguera for flatwater. Surf at Shacks Mmmmmmm;

That's cool as hell. I used to live at Playa Jobo's about 2 blocks from where the bigair link pic was taken. The reef break at Jobos is sick. There's a rip that will take you out just past the point that's strong enough that you don't even have to paddle out, and there's a gap in the reef about 150 meters west of the point with another rip that lets you get outside again easy.
I think that the place they are calling "shacks" in the article is the same place we used to call Wildos. There's a hole in the reef there that's lined with urchins. Its kind of like a reverse blow hole and it's located right in the impact zone. If you aren't careful, and you get too close to it on a big day, you can get sucked right inside the hole and turn in to a human pin cushion.
A couple of other good places to try near by are Mojones and Crashboat, close to Aguadilla. They only break on a big swell, but when Jobos and Wildos close out, they are about perfect.

For what you are looking for just stay in or near the Ocean Park neighborhood. You can kite directly off the beach in the bay at Ocean Park. Or walk up the beach and do downwinders from Punta Las Marias. This area is also close enough to go into Old San Juan at night for nightlife. Fun spot for a short kite vacation. |

just my 2-cents...
For PR
Our winter = good surf (north of island)
Our summer = good flat water (south of island)
What ever u do....rent a car...."RENT A CAR"
It's by far the best way to go from spot to spot.
And take plunty of spare change cause they got shit loads of tolls on the roads.

It usually gets flat on the north side too mid-summer. Not much wind then either except in front of the t-storms.

I am working on a trip to PR for the last week of Jan and first of Feb. I need a change from La Ventana and PR has surf in the winter. I may be with riders of differing abilities and it would be nice to coordinate vehicles for different launches. If anyone is interested in timing a trip with us let me know.

Ive lived in Aquadilla PR for the last three years. Being a beginning kiter, I would recommend La Parguera on the southwest part of the island. Call Louis 787.646.6777. www.prkbc.com He is a great guy who taught me to kite awhile back. Ocean Park in San Juan is good too. Shacks/Montones can be advanced places to ride with the predominantly Northern waves hitting the coast this time of year. Wildo is almost always off-shore winds. Have fun.... Being you will be on a cruise ship, you're probably going to dock in @ San Juan.
San Juan is sick...I spent 1 week in San Juan...What I noticed, smoke'n Hot women, great rum, and sick kiting....I was there in the summer (July) when the beaches in San Juan were packed....It was like 50,000 people on the beach - 40,000 thousand of them were wearing G-strings...wind was like 9m-11m everyday...and only about a dozen kites in the water....it was sick....all eyes on you...!
But be ready to fork out the cash cause lodging in San Juan aint cheap...
Don't worry about the wind not blowing.... rent a car...it takes less than a day to drive around the whole island...There's always wind on the island everyday...Sometimes, you have to go find it...

There really isn't much wind on the south side of the island during winter cause most of the wind is from the NE so best bet that time is to stick to the san juan/ isla verde / airport area. blows everyday
summertime the wind shifts E or SE and the south side of the island gets good wind
as well as the north side
Waves in winter, flat in the summer
on a cruise ship, stick with what da man says, stay around san juan / isla verde get a car |
