I think 20M is considered a small kite down there.

Thumb's Up

Head up North of LA or into Baja to Punta San Carlos. San Diego is better for wakeboarding and surfing.

The fall can serve up some Santa Ana's. Your best bet is Silver Strand, but pay attention to the habitats and launching areas.

Big kite, big board, but it can pickup this time of year

I didn't see any kites last week at Misson Beach but when I went to Newport there were two people kiting.

They were on big kites - 13m & 15m

Stinky's Cove on Fiesta Island (Mission Bay) or Tourmaline are good spots...don't bother unless you have a big kite though.

Aren't Santa Ana winds pretty much straight offshore?

I lived in SD (north county) for 3 years as a kiter.
I had a legitimate session than 10 times in the San Diego area.

I looked every day----and had a job I could drop everything and go.
I worked for Liquid Force so I had free reign of the best gear too.
But-----
It is frustrating ----and rarely gets above 12 mph.

The average YEAR ROUND windspeed in SD is 6mph.

You are so much better off focusing on surfing there.

The surf is fun-----and just bring your biggest kite just in case.
You can kite with a surfboard and a big kite some afternoons at places like Cardiff Reef and Silver Strand.

But I would not waste your time chasing it around in all the traffic.

PS----Stinky's is a HORRIBLE place to kite.
Don't bother.
It's a tiny pond with no wind.
And a very dirty pond.
I cut my foot on a beer bottle there and the scar never did heal right.
It's nasty.

On the other hand it blows out in Ventura almost every afternoon (strong on-shore). I can't remember if that was seasonal or pretty much year round. It's been about 27 years since I left Ventura so its all a little hazy....

Check Sail Bay. Its a part of Mission Bay off Riviera St. The cops were kicking kiters out of there during the summer but they dont seem to bother this time of year. Its way nicer and cleaner than Fiesta. 14 is about the smallest kite I have seen there. For more of a sure thing drive north a hour and 45 to Belmont Shore. ikitesurf has a sensor there.
