Tue Sep 22, 09 10:04 am 4 Open Positions on Port of HR Waterfront Rec Committee |
|
|
Hey All,
There is are four open positions on the Port of Hood River Waterfront Recreation Committee (WFRC). To be considered you must be a registered voter in Hood River County and reside in Port of Hood River district which is Hood River County, minus Cascade Locks.
The WFRC meets, discusses, votes, and makes recommendations to the Port of Hood River Commissioners. If you're sick and tired of the way your Hood River Waterfront is managed, this is where you can make change happen.
If you are interested and meet the requirements, please go by the Port office starting as early as tomorrow for the next two weeks and apply. You can call the Port office at: 541 386 1645 for more information.
Waterfront Recreation Committee Members are listed here:

There might be more open positions depending on what is approved in tonight's Port meeting. Last edited by forrest on Sat Oct 31, 09 11:28 am; edited 2 times in total |

The Port has posted in the Hood River News. I would encourage anyone who fits the requirements to volunteer. It's only a few meetings a year and you get to help make decisions about recreation on the water front.
You have until November 6th to apply.

This would be great time for someone to step up and give back to the community. As stated it takes very little time but can help make a huge impact.

If anyone out there is considering volunteering but aren't quite sure what you'll be getting into, I encourage you to try it as you will find this to be a very rewarding and challenging endeavor.
I was talked into running for a Commissioner position for the Port of Skamania a couple of years ago without really knowing what I was getting in to. I was a little leery of getting in to the whole "government bureaucracy" thing and being called a politician but it has turned out to be something that I am really enjoying being involved with. I get to work with a very talented and dedicated staff who care about what they do and I feel like I get to bring some of the "run government like a business" approach to what we are doing. Although I still haven't got my own parking space at kite beach that Roger promised me....
Like many of you I get very frustrated with national politics and all of the jockeying and game playing that goes on but I have a new appreciation for how the local and regional systems work. City Councils, Port Commissions, County Commissions, Fire Districts, etc... is where the rubber meets the road. Sure, there's the occasional person with an "agenda" but mostly you see very dedicated, hard working people who are really doing their best to do the right thing and trying to serve the greatest number of people. You want to see a circus - go to Washington D.C. You want to see democracy in action go to your local city council or Port meeting.
Not everyone has the time or temperament to work on things like this but if you want to change the status quo quit whining about it here on the forum and get involved. You'll be surprised at what you can accomplish and gain more insight in to how the system works.

| If I still lived in town I'd be eager to volunteer. When the committee was first formed it was filled quickly. As someone who lived there many years and was somewhat involved in and saw the effect of the politics there, I can say that this is a welcome evolution in the way the Port is run. There's a 180-degree shift in communication and cooperation with the public, the city council, and the county, and I'd encourage those of you who have been particularly vocal about the port's shortcomings to look at this as an opportunity to effect change. |

I would really like to, but I live on the other side of the river. I will tell a few people about this who may be good candidates.
