That lip is insane! It's almost half the size of the wave. Brutal.

Since I started kiting, I really don't even want to bother with surfing. Even when it's glassy in the morning, I don't want to waste my time, 'cause I want to save my energy for when the wind comes up in the afternoon.
I'm a wind junkie I guess. Always was, just never knew it before.

just need more energy - working on the double sess - after 45 minutes of surf/flail pretty much ready to drown - then a few hours recovery for afternoon kite
can be fun as long as you don't have to drive, make dinner, figure a tip, chew hard food, or lift a 40 later

What is the probability that the pictured surfer walked away from that? That looks heavy.

Reading article it sounded like everyone survived that day although it mentioned one guy nearly drowning. Pretty intense.

K Slate named one of boards 'wizard sleeve' Wonder if he got that from Borat?

Slater has been riding some insanely short boards by conventional surfing standards (5'6" ), pushing the boundries of conventional surfboard design with a ' shorter is better ' approach . He says in good waves you only need the extra foam & length to paddle into the wave - Once on the wave the extra length only gets in the way.
I think this is interesting from a kitesurfing perspective. Did kiteboarders already know this ' new concept ' in surfboard design that Slater has been experimenting with ? - OR - Did kitesurfers just find that conventional surfboards were a bit too bulky for thier needs ?
Slater has been 'shaping' many of his own boards, and riding them in comps lately. My guess is that we will be seeing some boards from Channel Islands with a ' shaped by Kelly Slater ' stamp on it. Maybe even eventually taking over for Al Merrick ?
Check out that wood ' ironing board ' he's got in his quiver.

That's an interesting question. I think shorter boards in kitesurfing come more from the non-paddling nature of the sport rather than kitesurfers being ahead of the curve. The ability to hang off the kite and the addition of straps to many boards pretty much makes anything rideable (and easily test-able, as the article talks about) on a wave.
If you look at those riding waves strapless and unhooked on an appropriately small sized kite, using the wave for power, I think many are riding pretty much the same sized board they would paddle (if they're an equally skilled surfer) right now. Maybe a bit shorter but pretty close.
I see that changing for sure. As we all get better at combining the kite and the wave, there's huge room for strapless progression on tiny boards. Formerly I was on a 6'1" quad, but now as my turns and confidence on the wave under the kite has improved, I'm dropping down to something in the 5'6 to 5'8 range. Wide, with probably a quad setup. In my opinion that's the beauty of the quad...more efficiency with less volume, and wicked tight turns.
Watch 5'5 x 19 1/4 redux and prepare to get your mind blown

Nate, mostly agree but from my own experience straps are counterproductive to powerful riding - somebody who knows where to put thier feet is going to rip. Everybody else is just hanging around
Riding without straps evolves directly from understanding the flow of a board in waves, swell, and chop. Twin tips, being low volume are much less affected. The first time one gets on a "directional" or traditional surfboard, one feels the water very much more directly. Anybody who *really* surfs can tell you what barefoot feels like vs booties - "real" boards transmit so much more information to you that there simply isn't a comparison.
If you've gotta jump, don't ride a surfboard. For the rest of us, wahoo.
Back on topic, if you watch the early tow-in videos, you'll see that the strapped crews went to low volume boards very quickly as they no longer needed the paddle power of a traditional big wave board. Kelly is a mutant, always has been. He has more strength in his pinkie than I probably have in my whole arm. He is capable of paddling teeny boards into big-ass surf. The rest of us - not so much.
The smallest board I can paddle is a 6'10' but my 5'8" kid board is the shit on a kite.
