Temira is encouraging people to use Twitter to post onsite wind reports.
"Speaking of, if you’re on Twitter, don’t forget to tweet your windsurfing/kiting onsite reports. Windsurfers, tag with #gorgewind, and kiters, tag with #gorgekite. In your tweet, include location, average sail/kite size, time, and current conditions."
It could be quite useful if enough people were posting up-to-date and accurate reports from all the launch sites.

If it rhymes with "Shitter"...something's up. Seriously, I don't get it either and social media dominating the future of business communication doesn't have me sold yet.
I do like nwkite and 2nd Wind FB updates however.

It's for celebrities, movie stars and pro athletes. You know; for people that have lives soooo interesting, other people want to follow their every move…
Don't let your boss see this: http://www.calgaryherald.com/business/fp/Companies+clamp+down+Twitter+Facebook+study/1913526/story.html
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. While the service costs nothing to use, accessing it through SMS may incur phone service provider fees.
Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide. It is sometimes described as the "SMS of the Internet"[3] since the use of Twitter's application programming interface for sending and receiving short text messages by other applications often eclipses the direct use of Twitter.
Twitter is ranked as one of the 50 most popular websites worldwide by Alexa's web traffic analysis.[4] Although estimates of the number of daily users vary because the company does not release the number of active accounts, a February 2009 Compete.com blog entry ranked Twitter as the third most used social network[5] based on their count of 6 million unique monthly visitors and 55 million monthly visits.[5] In March 2009, a Nielsen.com blog ranked Twitter as the fastest-growing site in the Member Communities category for February 2009. Twitter had a monthly growth of 1,382 percent, Zimbio of 240 percent, followed by Facebook with an increase of 228 percent.[6] However, only 40 percent of Twitter's users are retained.[7]

| Users of Twitter post everything they are thining every second of the day, I have an account but dont post updates, just follow people (subscribe to their updates). It can be useful such as CNN's feed which can break news before it is even on TV. I personally dont care what my friends are thinking about 24/7 and I dont want to tell everyone what I'm thinking about 24/7. One other kind of useful thing about it (not really) is that some people create accounts for their plants and set up a program to update twitter when they need water.

| In general it is retarded IMHO. But certain aplications work, as mentioned the Temira wind reports which I apreciate when looking for the live wind and post to when I can, and Slingshot type info.

The wind update/site report idea is a good one, and it could work if everyone were carrying around an iphone or blackberry and got coverage everywhere they went. But then, I kind of like not carrying around an iphone or blackberry and not getting coverage everywhere I go...

The wind reports thing is kind of interesting, I guess my buddys and I have been doing that for years. The problem with that is:
1) The conditions almost always change by the time you get to the beach
2) Why do I want to tell everyone in the world that conditions are good at the spot I am at?
3) There's these wind sensor doohickey's that give you a real-time scientific assessment of the wind, not somebody's opinion of the wind an hour ago.
Anyway, Twitter has some interesting potential uses. I am just tired of it getting so much airplay. Its like a few years ago when everyone was talking about "Blogs" ... really who gives a shit if you know the latest buzz word.
Guess I am just a disgruntled, set in his ways, old school web user who gets nostalgic about Mosaic and Trumpet Winsock ... actually to hell with that, remember BBS', 2400 baud modems? that shit was illmatic.

Ah, the good ole days.
Seriously, the problem with twitter is that it should exist entirely on your mobile platform and not even bother with your PC. That's how most people that use twitter use it. Who wants to sit in front of a PC and refresh twitter home page over and over? But getting all the updates from your friends on your phone is pretty sweet. For me it's a way of following a bunch of security researchers and what they're working on so I can stay up to date with my job.

Hayes Smartmodem (1981)
In 1978, with $5000 in hand, Dennis Hayes launched what would become one of the most noteworthy tech companies of the eighties: Hayes Microcomputer Products. Soon after founding his company, Hayes would release its flagship product, the 300-baud Smartmodem.
Primitive modems of the time generally required buggy acoustic couplers. But Hayes outdid them all with an affordable stand-alone unit that plugged directly into a phone jack. Eventually the screeches of carrier tones were heralding the computer telecommunications revolution, and online bulletin board systems sprang up everywhere. Competition ensued, with Hayes battling U.S. Robotics, Diamond, and others to see who could be fastest. Personal modems ultimately hit 56 kilobits per second. But although they have been far outpaced by broadband technology, we'll still be seeing modems in many homes for years to come.
Original 300-baud Smartmodems are very difficult to find, but some of the "faster" models (1200 and 2400) sell for around $20 to $30 on eBay.
