Hi all! So, My wife and I are moving from Dallas, Tx to Portland soon and I wanted to know the coastal conditions in the summer months. Is the Gorge better? By the way, the shark thread scared me a bit. Not used to kiting with big fish that take, "Exploratory Bites"! Gimme the rundown of the kiting scene. Thanks for your help!

Dewd! I was kiting on Eagle Mountain Lake and this knarly big snake started slithering through the water right at me! I think it was some kind of black mambo mocassion thing.

You got nothing to worry about out here! Thumb's Up

and Slither the Water Moccassian is to be avoided Twisted Evil

Holy crap! I guess the moral of the story is .......... just don't fall or body drag to much. Ok, so what are the coastal winds like on average vs. the Gorge?

The coast has less windy days in the summer than the gorge but the wind quality is much better. Coast winds usually range from 12m-7m just like the gorge. A lot of times it starts off as 12m wind and builds through the early afternoon to solid 9m-7m wind depending on the spot your riding at.

On the other hand the coast can go year round where as the gorge shuts down around October (besides the occasional cold ass east wind days at Stevenson or Rooster Rock) The coast gets good south systems in the winter making 12 months of kiting possible. All ya need for the winter on the coast is a good 5/3 or 5/4 suit.

Is the Gorge really gusty? For those of you who have been to kite beach in Maui, are we talking that gusty? Thats like, rip your kite apart gusty. Here in Dallas on our lakes its gusty but managable.

Welcome! Ya, it's a bit gusty here, but a great place to kite, ski, fish, mt bike, ...
The coast is Awesome.

Buy a ski pass to get you through the winter. I had never heard "freezing drizzle" before moving here.

Portland has great beer! For the coast you will need a good wetsuit, booties and gloves. I have a hotline 5/4 hot combo. Its fun to get out in the ocean for a little space during the winter months.
