Doesn't oil weaken this line? All I know is that it is absolutely forbidden to let oil touch and rock climbing/rescue rope.

I've found that soaking in very hot water and chewing on it for a few minutes does the trick every time.

maybe a materials scientist can chyme in here.

I remember taking a plastics materials science class back in college and one of the tests we would do to determine a type of unknown plastic was to put it various chemicals such as gasoline, acetone, MEK, water to see if any of them made the sample desolve or visually change.

I would imagine it depends on the type of oil and what the line is made out of.

since dyneema/spectra is a polymer and all polymers are made from oil whether it be petroleum based or plant based i would think it could compromise the line strength.

but I only remember bits and pieces of that class so hopefully someone with a better background on this can answer the question better.

btw for me I always find soaking the line in water and then either chewing it or squishing it (simulating chewing) with a pair of pliers works good.

water is nice and safe Smile
