Besides borrowing the Dangler's dogs, what's a good cheap way to secure kite gear in the bed of a pickup?

Hardware box. You can build one out of marine plywood for probably $100. Probably more secure to buy a metal one. Check CL.

costs a bit, but hard metal top. Makes my bed a huge lockable trunk.

I have a large tool box that is designed to go sideways in the front of the bed it is big enough to hold 3 kite a 150 and all my other gear. I have it locked down with a bike cable and a paddle lock. I lock my truck keys and wallet inside while I am out kiteing(had my truck broke into at rock cr)

Stow your gear in "lawn -n- leaf" trash bags. Throw some crushed beer cans and some wadded up mcdonalds wrappers next to them. No one will bother it.
