Tue Aug 04, 09 1:06 pm Los Angeles kiting? |

I'm headed to Redondo Beach just south of LA Saturday for a week. There is a bunch of kite info on the web but for some naive reason I trust many comments on this blog more than the web, even if I don't wear a helmet. Does anyone have suggestions for kiteboarding spots with some wind and w/o big waves. Also, any good web sites that I should check out (for LA kiteboarding).
My brother may take some lessons out there. Any suggestion for a good certified instructor or school?

Your closest spot to Redondo is probably Leo Carillo beach. Still about an hour to hour and a half away but better than making the long trek to Ventura. You may want to think about finding spots closer to San Diego rather than fighting the traffic north to L.A. _________________ It's always happy hour somewhere in the world. |

You might want to stay away from Huntington Beach, looks like a little attitude problem there.....
I will be in the area in less than a month, I am going to bring my spear gun and a large hunting knife just to defend myself form the locals.... _________________ It's all good |

they do lessons at Belmont and your brother won't have to deal with "big" waves. |

Don't forget about the SI of LA Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. Plenty of kiters. Captain Kirk's surf/windsurf/kiteshop is right there too. They have lessons/gear.
It really is the most reliable wind in the city. Leo Carillo is a f&%king long way away as is OC.

I have never kited in South Bay or anywhere in Socal, but grew up there and would visit my mother who lived in Palos Verdes till she passed away a couple of years ago.
When I visited South Bay since 2000 there would occasionally be moderate SW winds which makes for port tack conditions right there at Redondo and Torrance Beaches. People were out riding big kites and upwind rights because of the extreme onshore winds. I would have for sure gone out if I had kiting gear as it looked fun and uncrowded. If you are hanging right at Redondo check it first before doing the extreme traffic hussle to get to one of the other spots. Cabrillo Beach is next closest at about half hour with average traffic.
