Seriously, what's the deal with access at Lyle? I hear rumors of $1000 tickets for crossing the train tracks? but also that going under the raliroad bridge is possible?

Everyone knows that windsurfers were able to get some concessions from the railroad companies to have a crossing at Doug's Beach. Shouldn't it be possible for the CGKA (maybe with the assistance of the CGWA) to work out something similar with access at Lyle? Someone here must know about the politics involved in that.

Maybe all that is needed is a gate that comes down when trains are approaching???

Its illegal to cross the tracks and the RR is giving out tickets. It's not a rumor. If you cross the tracks and the RR security guard is there your going to get popped.

If you think its as easy as putting a gate up, why don't you do a little research about how long and how much money the windsurfers spent getting the crossing at doug's.

I believe it would also technically be called trespassing going under the bridge, still RR property whether you go over or under. According to a UP employee they usually just look the other way untill a problem arises as it has at Lyle

It would be interesting to do a little research into the crossing at Doug's, actually. That's something I don't know much about, might be worth looking into. One thing is safe to say, which is that where an organization like the railroad is concerned, liability issues are usually going to trump politics. Also true that a jet ski will trump liability issues...

This is what I remember about the Doug's Beach crossing.

The CGWA was able to proove that historically, people accessed the river at that point. This way the RR could not deny a crossing without a good reason.

Then it came down to who was going to pay to build the crossing. I heard that it was very expensive ($50,000) back 12 years ago or so. I believe the RR paid the majority, however the CGWA paid a huge sum also.

The right person at CGWA could give you all the accurate details.

This is an old topic. Access was ruined by douchebags who just couldn't pay attention to a few simple guidelines. (i.e. park across the street, don't cross in view of trains.)

CGKA is working on it and is your best chance of ever re-opening access. Join & add your voice to the effort to expand & improve access throughout the area.

We are beating a dead horse here.

This is an expensive sport, my suggestion is take your 1000 and get a lesson. As for other places to learn, Sand Bar, Stevenson, ............ Look at the "spots" section of this site.

I don't think it's hype. People whom I would consider reliable have reported the tickets being handed out. Sad

If you have a waverunner or a boat, you can still access Lyle from the water. There are some REALLY great learning spots around if you have a boat. If you don't, I'd recommend Sauvies, Jones or Woodland until you're up and riding comfortably. Sauvies has the least reliable wind but the greatest number of friendly folk who'll help keep you pointed in the right direction.

The BEST learning spot in the Gorge, steady winds and similar water conditions to Floras lake, is a secret I'll divulge only after my family members have progressed or given up. Very Happy Or maybe never. Wink

this is a lot bigger than just kiters because it seems windsurfers, fishermen, and tourists all use the area as well. But it still amazes me: HOW DIFFICULT IS IT NOT TO CROSS THE TRACKS WHEN A TRAIN IS COMING??? Seems pretty basic. and then we wouldn't have this problem.

I still think a little bit of fence and a gated crossing like they have at Doug's would solve this problem and be a win/win for everybody. (Alternatively, a crossing under the bridge)
