First I would like to thank all the kiters who put up with me yesterday. I was offered all kinds of tips which I could greatly use. everyone was extremely helpful and lyle seemed to be a spot for the very seasoned and the newbies like myself. I am learning with my son and I would definitley take my son there for some gorge time although we live in portland. i like the way the wind blows you back to shore when you are new although it is very very shallow as my under water vision can support.

On another note, I saw a BNSF copper there when we were leaving writing a couple peoples names down. It did not appear as if tickets were being given but I had to head home. Is is alright to access the sand bar from another direction. I have walked all kinds of railroad tracks and never seen a officer on them. If it is an issue why can signs be posted to stay clear of the tracks etc. This is the first I have heard about people getting cited for crossing a track etc. Do we need to gather money to pay for the signage for the railroad so they can stay off our back. Just inquiring as the site was/is a stellar place for me to learn minus the crowds from HR.

Hey Bam!

As previously mentioned in this thread, it's an old topic. Search "Lyle", you'll find a lot of info. Long story short: CGKA is working on it; join the CGKA. The RR seems to come down on Lyle access harder because of a bunch of idiots who couldn't be discreet. This is the first I've heard of name taking; my guess is they were being warned that next time they might be arrested. It's a $1000 gamble crossing those tracks right now...

An elderly woman was hit and killed by a train yesterday near the white salmon bridge. If anyone thinks they can cross the tracks at lyle when ever they want they will be sadly mistaken. If you cross the tracks at lyle be prepared to pay a large fine or even get arrested. STAY AWAY FROM LYLE!

so i was at lyle yesterday and spoke to the coppers...yes they took my name and said if they saw me there again crossing the tracks they would give me a ticket that would be around $500. (technically they did not see me cross the tracks, however i didnt deny that i did).
They also said a women(82) was hit by a train and killed on friday in the lyle area, hence why they were there yesterday in heavy force.
They were very nice about it and explained that they have been warning people, but with the recent death they were going to start handing out tickets.....I do not believe they gave anyone a ticket yesterday.

cheers!

This will ultimately be a perfect example of how a public forum will spell the death of a great launch site. Lets just say that Lyle has got a cluster fuck amount of issues. From property ownership disputes, to access easements, to land management plans, to conservation groups, and potential federal endangered species act and bald eagle recover plan issues. The CGKA is in a sticky position about telling people what to do on this one for a variety of reasons.

The bottom line is this: cross the tracks at your own risk and realize that every time the RR trucks are down there, you can be sure that it does NOT bode well for future access, tickets or not. The more people are spotted crossing and kiting there the worse it is going to get. It can be a good place to kite but there are also lots of hazards in that spot, mostly big knarly trees right beneath the water, and if you standing in the middle of the shallow water with your kite at 12 like a freaking kook for hours on end, your going to get barked at.

I realize at times that it may be tough not to post up about how cool you are for kiting at Lyle or how freaking great it is but just remember that people that kite there already know what its like, all you are doing is luring more people there. More people there is why we are in the state we are in.

note to self---don't get online immediately after hitting thumb with a hammer.

I agree that kites parked at noon are a bummer but does 500 yards of flat shallow water not give you enough room to go around? Give me a break.

Not when you decide that right in the damn middle of the beach would be the best place to park your kite. If your learning than you should scoot down towards the RR tracks, that way people can tack out much easier without having to zig-zag, zig,zag because someone is choking the beach tacks.

I'm not the only one that is annoyed by this. If you have to park, then learn where to park.

there is a small beach that is south of the klickitat river that you can get to from the Indian's land with a nice launch into the cold water flats I am sure if you park your kite at 12 there though you block the whole road. the launch still beats stevensen though. if you really want access or if you are an instructor pm me i have a zodiac for sale killer deal! 800 includes 9.9 suzuki 2 stroke mixes its own oil, 5 person capacity will post in classifieds tomorrow with pic. Also good to get to nac nac flats where ever that is Smile
