I second the idea of different divisions. Maybe a box on the time keeper sheet that they can check for strapless, directional, or twin tip. You'll still have the best overall but this could help spread the bragging rights around.
I'm going strapped on a directional again this year just to see if I can be anywhere close to Corey and Bison but next year I'm gonna do it strapless.

I have all the respect in the world for Corey (your a super cool gentleman) but how can you feel good about beating everyone when there's no competition with cheater sticks? Honestly, I could not but to each his own... When Sky won it on a surfboard, now that was honorably just as sick as it gets! Way to go Sky!
Without a doubt there should be classes and I've been hinting about this for the past three years. I wont be attending this years event for the simple fact, I dont like to race for 3rd... It's getting old! Leveling the playing field makes it a blast and certainly substanciates a nobile victory.
IMHO the real winner of last years race was Brad Gordon... He finished 3rd... Just a thought... Sure the stoke level will be great as usual and I hope it nukes for you all. Enjoy! |

The real winner is the real winner. Corey won, fair and square.
Corey has run this race every year for the last 20 years. If anything, his advantage would be that hard earned thing called ' experience'. No one has the right to take that honor away from him, unless they flat out beat him, skis, board, etc..
As for the categories, something that needs to be understood about this event is that in the history of gorge windsport events, the Blowout is undoubtedly the most difficult logistics event to run. Keeping track of 80-125 competitors, much less getting them all on the water via a rocky point is a nightmare in itself.
**btw - big props to Spike last year for keeping everyone at a fast launching pace.
If you truly have a beef about how the event is run, there are two things you can do about it.
1) Deal with it, compete and have respect for how the organizers run the event and how you finish in regards to your peers.
or
2) Do not compete, and then lend your volunteer time to help the organizers make those changes you want to see come to life.
Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Who was a skier with kite for the windsurf blowout along with Ken Winner how did they place? It used to be a race between short board and long board, then kite and windsurfer. Corey hired is own ski in the beginning to pick up his skis as they blew off. It was scary as his airmatress style kites were over head. Any photos of his first rigs?
We also ran a qualifier race to home valley to test skills.
Any one finishing with in an hour of the first place time was allowed to run the blowout.
I had the fastest qualifying time at 58 minutes.(now the time for the whole race) Yes that was just to home valley and starting at Cascade locks. On a bic dufour wing and 72 fathead. I had the best time yesterday starting with the blowout, just to home valley and back. Perfect ultra cat 6.5 day. _________________ Gorge Performance

Good point, and Jim has been nipping at Corey's heels for a couple of years now.
One other thing to point out. At the windsurf blowout, there were two, maybe three kiters poaching in on the start and running the whole thing unassisted and on waterskis. Probably Ken W and Corey.
If you want to beat these guys, you need to be doing what they are doing.
Practicing and getting experience.
I've run the windsurf blowout a little over a dozen times and 3 times on a kite. Each time I run it, I learn something new, whether it be from bad mistakes or good decisions, my runs get more tactical and hopefully better each year (faster always depends on wind and equipment size choices for me).
Bob - It was great to see you out on the water yesterday. Pull out the kite and join us this weekend.
Maybe you and I can start a King of the Blowout category for those who run both the windsurf blowout and the kite blowout.

Sure thing Pepi. Good to see you and Brian. Congrats on your placement.
I could run it with a trainer on a SUP. Can I have my own class so I will place well? _________________ Gorge Performance

Signed Up and Stoked!
If you don't want to race for 3rd then buy some skis Kind of strange that you hint at Sky winning on a surfboard against skis, makes me think its possible to beat the guys on "Cheater Sticks" . Sounds like you just need to get better |

Chooch it's ok man, you dont have to try and get back at me after the Eric Reinstra thread... He just needed better kites. Sky won in 07, the wind was super light and he cruised right through Home Valley when the skis were sinking. Did it on a super floaty strapless surfboard! Super cool!
But, if it's lit up, good luck catching the skiers. I'm sure it's just all about excperience anyway. I'll work on getting better... |

Just a question to throw out there...
Would they let you enter a downhill snowboard race with skis on? No, I don't think they would. Its about having a good time for me, but Wally has a very valid point. You can ride whatever you want to ride, but when it comes time to bragging rights, there should be separate classes.
If the wind is light, I'm going to have a kayak on each foot. |

Saturday:
Start of a blistering heat wave if the long term models pan out here. Very strong push of hot air northward from NorCal while the Pacific High tilts inland across B.C. and begins to backfill into ID / MT. This setup will kill Gorge winds with the OR Coast only offering some moderate mid to upper teen strongly canted northerly winds.

And Sunday looks even hotter in Portland.
It's still too early to panic, but maybe it will go Easterly and we can race from HR to Stevenson instead. |

Here are some options:
1. no kiting this weekend a. SUP and Party at the Bolstad Tiki Hut Friday night
b. do your own thing
2. load up gear, head to the coast and sit on the beach with light wind.
3. we re-schedule for another weekend. I can re-schedule the Blowout by amending our permit with the Coast Guard
Whatever we end up doing is totally dependent on the wind. Be patient, this is a wind sport and you have to take what god gives you.
The good thing is I have built a report with the Coast Guard petty Officer in charge of permitting and she is understanding and willing to work with us. |
