Gasoline barge runs aground near Hood River confluence
07:38 AM PDT on Thursday, July 9, 2009
By Kgw.com Staff
HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- A barge carrying 1 million gallons of gas has run aground near the mouth of the Hood River, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
None of the gas had spilled, the Coast Guard said.
The Tidewater tug Chief reportedly grounded just before 4 a.m.
Coast Guard officials in Portland dispatched an inspection team to check for possible pollution and to determine how the tug boat grounded.
Other boats were en route to assist in removing the barge.
No gas sheens or other evidence of pollution were evident from the barge, the Coast Guard said.

Really? I know there is a little finger of the Sandbar extending towards the channel, but this has to be operator error as there seems to be plenty of room to get by the Sandbar.

Naw check out the gorge.net cam.. He's headed east, stays left of the red, ready to shoot the bridge but runs aground...
The obvious is hes too far right, but for the driver's sake, Im thinkin the water has dropped and that sticky finger of sand has extended into the channel

For some reason I thought the Gorge.net cam was having a problem and just showing an old image! Wow, that sand is moving fast eh!

Does that mean the Slider Project now owns the barge? I remember setting it out there, don't you? Quick go and slap a few stickers on it. Maybe even sell a couple of the sides to advertisers and paint them. Imagine how much people would pay for that much space.

| I don't know... Looks like he passed the buoy and then cut too far to the right. I think he's out of the channel. I wonder if there was another ship passing westbound at the time?

| I ran aground with my SUP last week in that same spot. Fortunately, I was able to step off and walk, but I remember the water was only about 6" deep. I was surprised to find that much sand that far out, and East of the cold outflow from the Hood River.

(from Oregonian story) "...aground about 50-feet from where the sandy fan of the Hood River delta reaches into the wide Columbia River, though the barges appeared to be within the Columbia's marked shipping channel.
Coast Guard inspectors who were in the river in a small boat this morning reported that the buoys marking the channel were in their appropriate location.
