At least its not posing any hazard to kiting! I'ts surprising that the USCG hasnt cordoned off the entire sandbar for its investigation...

I wish I was working on that tug. At least I'd be home by now! Stuck instead on a ship anchored off of Texas.

5 days overdue and counting... Shocked

"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has the ability to raise the water level of the Columbia behind Bonneville Dam by a few feet, which might help lift the barge from where it is grounded. But if the barge is firmly stuck, raising the river might not help, Corps spokesman Matt Rabe said."

Gorge.net barge-cam. Sweet.

I'll be watching this one unfold... as long as it doesn't break in half, flip over, or spill A MILLION GALLONS of gas in the river, I'll be stoked to see it off the permanent landscape. That would kill the sandbar scene pretty fast... New Carissa anyone???

We really need to show that barge isn't in the channel. Dredging would not be good for us, not good at all. Here's a jpg of the chart. Look at the red buoys and then look at the pic in Magicmakers post. The barge isn't in the channel. We need a pic showing both red buoys lined up and the barge South of that line. It's already being reported that the barge is in the channel. This could be used as an excuse to dredge, and they might not stop where the barge is... Even if they do, who knows how badly the spit could be destabilized.

I saw another tug trying to push it off this evening. Doesn't look like it was effective.

...Since the Army Corp is about as likely to check this site as the members of Slayer, I'll deliver the crushtanic news; Slayer's South of Heaven inform our situation; lined-up the buoys repeatedly on-the-water this p.m; the reds are south by at-least 25 ft; bee-arge is in the channel...and at 10:16 p.m. it's still at-rest;

PostThu Jul 09, 09 8:30 pm    UPDATE - Fuel barge aground near Hood River, Ore. Reply with quote

PORTLAND, Ore. — Attempts to free the grounded barge New Dawn with an additional tugboat near Hood River, Ore., were unsuccessful Thursday.

Working closely with Tidewater Tug and Barge, the owners and operators of the New Dawn, the Coast Guard approved a salvage plan to free the barge from the sandbar. The plan calls for an empty fuel barge to be brought alongside in order to transfer gasoline off the grounded vessel. This process, known as lightering, will decrease the draft of the New Dawn so that it may be freed from the river bottom.

The lightering operations will commence at first light on Friday morning.

Tidewater and Coast Guard personnel inspected the double hull of the barge and found no damage resulting from this incident. There has been no release of any cargo into the Columbia River and no impact to the environment. The cause of the grounding is still under investigation by the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard continues to work with state and local agencies, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, Oregon State Department of Environmental Quality and Washington State Department of Ecology to ensure a safe conclusion to the incident.

They are deffinately raising the river level to help the operation. When I arrived in HR today the Sand Bar was quite large. By time I left, the kiddie pools were full and getting deeper.

While I was in Hoor River I received a phone call from a Coast Guard Petty Officer asking me if I could assist them by asking kiters to please respect a 200 yard in all directions safety zone. I told her the best I could do is pass on the word. I didn't see Shawn Rogers today, so who knows what is really going to happen. JK Shawn....

Please stay away from the barge. The Coast Guard was working on finalizing our Blowout permit today until the barge grounded itself. Don't screw up and make us look bad. We do want the Coast Guard to approve our permit soon.

"lightering" a barge of gasoline certainly sounds cooler than lightening it Laughing

I imagine this will work since it's full of gas, the removed weight should raise the boat considerably... got my fingers crossed that this works. The story just came on the evening news now... so who got interviewed Smile They had a bunch of shots of windsurfers but of course properly only talked about kiteboarders! (they also had a shot of someone with lines on the grass Evil or Very Mad )

Hey Nak, last night on the news that said the coast guard had determined that the barge was outside of the shipping channel. So I think we're safe from dredging for the time being.

Although, dredging might not be a bad thing if we can get them to use the sand to create a beach all the way down the water front. That's the long term goal for the water front anyway.
